Recommended Avocados- Florida
« on: February 25, 2019, 11:26:21 AM »
Hi All,

First time poster here- been lurking for a few months.

I have just bought a new house with about a 5 acre lot in Melbourne, FL.  I am going to fence off some for the dogs and the rest is basically open space so I want to fill it with some fruit trees and a garden.

I wanted to get a list of avocados anyone enjoys that can be reliably grown here. I currently have a Brogdon and Catalina and am looking for about 3 more varieties.

Thanks for your help!

In SW Florida I have Marcus Pumpkin, Choquette, Day, Mexicola, Russell, Brogdon and some seedlings & unknowns. With that array this year I had a six month harvest window. All of them have good taste if held on the tree as long as possible. Brogdon has thin edible skin which clings and Mexicola is very small, 1/2 the size of a small Hass but the earliest for me. Beta and Dupuis seem interesting to me if I wanted to expand. Avocados are nearly the finest fruit I grow as far as usability. Mangoes are fantastic and Papaya come close because of precocity and long season. Since I have 100 more assorted trees yet to bear maybe my thoughts will change but that's where I am presently.

Congratulations on your new house & land! So cool to have 5 acres to play with...
We purchased a Winter Mexican avocado tree. Supposedly very similar to Hass, does well in Florida and cold hardy.
Best of luck to you
