Garcinia subeliptica
« on: October 02, 2012, 02:16:15 PM »
Does anyone other than me eat this fruit?

I've noticed it is mainly grown as an ornamental (Taiwan, supposedly Japan and costal China too).

The fruits, when ripe, look like Fuyu persimmons.  They oddly taste like persimmons too (no sourness) the only problem is that the ones I've eaten are quite hard.

The flowers give off the aroma of butter.

The plants have an odd columnar habit of growing.
What's that got to do with Jose Andres $10 brussel sprouts?

I typically have almost no confidence in Rheedia X or Garcinia Y.

However, it seems to me that G. subeliptica is actually well described and a single species.  I can even recognize the plant without tags.

It has an odd growing habit (usually columnar) somewhat strange leaves (there is a slight cusp at the tip)....

So far though I only know of one other person who eats the fruit (a guy who works at Gardens By The Bay in Singapore).  I assume his are "better" as a fruit because he mentioned how he likes to eat them (the ones I tried in Taiwan were quite tough to chew and typically I spit out the pulp as it was so tough)

I think so.  I don't usually see them from that perspective.  The cusp at the tip seems less pronounced than what I'm used to.

Garcinia subelliptica is called "Fumu" which means a tree brings fortune.
People in Taiwan know its fruit are poisonous and do not eat them.
