Fresh seeds still available.  No cuttings at this time.  All orders have been mailed out should receive by Monday.
I'm interested, but pics would be nice.

Lack of humidity may be the issue, if not maybe the fertilizer, they hate excess Nitrogen

Hey Adam, what substrate/soil mixes do you use for germinating Myrciaria and Eugenia seeds? What do you you recommend for fertilizer for seedlings vs established plants? I can always get both species to germinate, but many eventually get dieback. :/

Thanks in advance!

Miracle,
I love your your trellis layout! So effective, yet economical! :) I just made one myself.

I'm going to add some supplemental lighting and heat. Prehaps a reptile heat lamp? I haven't been able to get df to flower or even grow much inside the greenhouse. I suspect it doesn't like filtered sunlight, since my greenhouse has glass that reduces uv. It grows nicely outside in direct sunlight and hot weather. I want to grow it successfully this time. I'm so sick of nasty store-bought df. I am growing "Red Zamorano" and "Purple Haze". Fingers crossed!
Thanks for posting!

Hey guys,
Iv'e been trying to grow df from cuttings, with undesirable results (slowww growth). I am unimpressed with grocery store fruits and would like to grow/try the less common cultivars. I can hardly get them to grow in cooler temperatures, and they seem to only like unfiltered sunlight, which I can only get in warm/hot months (since I live in Ohio). I can't tell if it's just inadequate lighting that is the issue, or maybe the soil or feeding regimen. Does anyone in cooler regions use supplemental lighting? If so, how is it working out for you?

Thanks in advance! :)

Does anyone have tips for growing Araza? I have a struggling seedling with dieback issues. Same goes for me E. victoriana. :-\ Ideal conditions? Tips? Soil mix? Micros needed? I'd love to get some advice! :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Growing Ice Cream Beans in Containers?
« on: October 06, 2017, 02:16:46 AM »
I am attempting to fruit (or at least flower) one in a container. The largest of the two is around 1.5 years from seed at 7ft. I have them growing in 18" pots. I prune the roots, and plan to do a drastic prune to hopefully trigger blooms. I know they grow 40'+, but why not give a try? I know of a young tf enthusiast located in Wisconsin, who recently it managed to get his Inga to bloom at 3-4 years in a container. I doubt it set fruit, but hey! It still flowered and I don't think he even has a heated greenhouse. :o I'd think its worth experimenting with. :D

Has anyone experimented with grafting onto their Surinam cherry trees or know of any compatible non-Surinam cherry species? I am growing an unknown red type and "Zill's Dark". But I am unsure to if I will like the red type.

It's hard to tell without a photo ref. There is more than one disease that can cause brown spots.
Here's a link that may be helpful for identification. I've had similar issues with my A. reticulata, but it usually goes away over time. Much of it it caused by high humidity.

I too am worried about him. I noticed he hasn't been on the forum since the 5th. :-\ The island is called St. Maarten. As soon as I saw the island mentioned on the news he immediately came to mind. I hope he is okay!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Passifloras suited for a drier climate?
« on: September 13, 2017, 03:55:31 AM »
Thanks for the replies guys-! I must have left this out, but I have fruited what i believe to be "Purple Possum" from a Floridian nursery plant. But it kept on dying back on winter and eventually was a goner. :'( I did get quite a few fruits out of it. They were so much better than store bought yellow ones. I kind of would like to try ligularis or alata. I currently have rooted cuttings of P. edulis (purple type).

Its cool to hear someone is experimenting with P. quad. I have tried growing it, but it took over my wall with not a single flower. (I believe I was fertilizing too much.)

I want to use a Spiraclimb structure so I can take move my Passifloras from the greenhouse outside with ease and not let them take over too much. Maybe exposing them to a more variable temperature drop outside could trigger flowering? Or just heavy pruning. I just know now not to fertilize too much. I be a bit heavy-handed. ::)

If anyone's got cuttings of non-Passiflora edulis, I'm all over that cuz I'm too freaking impatient for seedlings and dont want to dabble with bootleg eBay seeds.. I'm not sure how shipping goes with CA. Sounds too complicated for me to bother with trades.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passifloras suited for a drier climate?
« on: September 12, 2017, 12:56:39 PM »
Hey all,
I would like some suggestions of Passiflora species for a dry/not very humid, yet warm climate. I keep most of my plants in a heated greenhouse that stays anywhere between the low 60s and mid 90s year round. (Depending on the weather outside.) I have species growing vigorously, but I am concerned to if they will flower or fruit eventually. I have some growing on trellises attached to a wall, but plan to have some grow on a home-made "Spiraclimb" using garden wire and a stake so the plant can be wrapped around as an endless bush-vine.  Maybe some of our California or Arizona growers could give a clue?
Thanks in advance! :)

I've made this mistake with citrus before.:( Hasn't happened since.
You've got to be careful and not judge by the surface of the soil. It dries the quickest and can be quite deceiving. The good thing is that overwatering is easily preventable!

You could mulch the top of the soil to keep the soil temperature cooler. It will conserve more water so you won't have water as much.

Make sure your soil mix is one that the species prefers. if you aren't sure, you can look up soil mix recipes you can make yourself.

Most importantly, Invest in a soil moisture meter. They aren't expensive (Cheap ones are under $10) and are great from preventing the errors mentioned. The prongs allow one to measure the moisture several inches below the surface of the soil. Some measure moisture, pH, and light.
It may also be helpful to look into  the moisture levels preferred by the plants you are concerned about.

What Garcinia species is the madrono? I've heard of two different varieties.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: 2017 Ohio Pawpaw Festival
« on: August 23, 2017, 01:04:37 AM »
I am interested. I visited their website a couple of months ago after buying a couple of plants at a local nursery in Cincinnati. I really liked the art they featured on their page featuring a raccoon and a paw paw. I have never tried the fruits before. Even though I have seen the trees at local parks. (They were not in season yet.)  I do have 2 saplings that I am growing and am totally interested to try different varieties when the opportunity comes. :) I just need to find someone to drive up there with me as I don't exactly enjoy driving..
Cool! Yeah, I was wondering if you were thinking of going since you're in the "vicinity"
I love the hippy-inspired artwork they do every year too. That raccoon is adorable!
There should be some amazing pawpaws to eat there.
I have booked a hotel but things around here have gotten a little wacky for me lately - I hope I don't have to cancel my plans.
If we both end up going for sure, we'll have to get in touch so we can meet up there! I've always wanted to meet members from the forum!:)

I'm not sure what to be more thrilled about.. Idaho home grown bananas, your gorgeous shot of the solar eclipse, or the fact that Neil Degrasse Tyson was within two blocks of your house. :o Either way, both all three occurrences are awesome! :D I'd be stoked to see Neil Degrasse Tyson over all the celebrities that are involved in recent films shot in Cincinnati. Both John Travolta and Nick Jonas have been in films in houses less than a mile from mine. :o Something about the Cincy suburbs grabs the hearts of filmmakers I guess?XD

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can you Germinate old Passiflora seeds?
« on: August 18, 2017, 12:50:19 PM »
A heating pad may be helpful, especially for cooler months. Day and night variation play a role as well. With seeds I keep them in evenly moist soil with a plastic covering to keep humidity in, outside on my front yard for the warmer parts of the year. But the best thing to do when buying is to either get cuttings to root or get fresh seeds directly from a forum member by posting the "buy, sell, trade" tab. Don't give up on them just yet though. I have had some pop up a year later, and now I don't have an id for them. :-\  If I may ask, where have you been buying yours Passiflora seeds in the past?
