Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting Annona scleroderma
« on: May 15, 2022, 04:40:09 PM »
Hi all, I have two questions for the experts out there. First, is Annona scleroderma compatible with Annona montana or Annona muricata? Second, when is the best season for getting scions to graft this species? I had a prized plant and it is not looking so good so I am trying to replace it if it dies.

Thanks

Does anyone have any sources for these? Particularly the latter? I haven’t had any luck finding even a hint about P. Insularum for sale anywhere but it’s a common species growing throughout the pacific.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cerrado species and dormancy
« on: October 29, 2021, 11:58:54 AM »
I have managed to sprout a few cerrado species like Annona vepretorum, Annona crassiflora, Duguetia furfuracea etc., and I know that cerrado species sometimes have a dormancy period where they like no water at all...these plants are now seedlings of a couple months old, none of them are taller than maybe 7 inches, so my question is, when does one first allow them to go into this dormancy? Do you grow them as per usual for the first year, or maybe until they reach a certain height or trunk caliper? Any advice is appreciated. Right now I have them growing with my cacti in the greenhouse, not too humid and I am watering only when the soil is dry to the touch.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Peruvian Amazon Annona ID help
« on: July 04, 2021, 02:47:13 AM »
First is this plant here. I purchased the seeds from a vendor on the facebook Annona forum from Peru, they said the botanical name for this plant was "Annona lisa," I thought maybe it was Annona edulis but the seeds appear to be different. I also thought it could be Rollinia but the fruits and seeds look different to what Im used to too. Its from the Peruvian Amazon as the title states.

Second ID request is this cherimoya variety. Purchased it from the local Chinese market, I picked this one in particular because it didnt look like all the others in the bin, all others were the typical smooth cherimoya. When I cut it open I was very surprised to see how thick the skin was...but when I tasted it I was mind blown. It tastes EXACTLY like strawberry banana yogurt. I had my family try it just to make sure I wasnt going crazy and they all agreed. Fruit was medium sized and delicious but the only problem was it was loaded with seeds. This one single fruit had 65 large viable seeds. I know its cherimoya but I was just wondering if anyone knew what cultivar it might be based on this description.

I know this is a long shot, but can anyone identify this mystery Annona? This was bought from a Vietnamese grocery store last year here in Michigan. This is the dried peel and seed. When it was fresh it was modestly sized, they were each a little less than a pound, the outer skin was covered in brown fuzzy hair and ripened to a dark olive green brown color. The flesh was yellow when fresh and dried to this orange color. I planted the seeds last year and they looked like cherimoya seedlings, but they all died when we lost power last winter unfortunately. I am mad at myself for not posting it when I had it fresh, and taking a picture of it when it was fresh and when the plants were alive but this is what I have to work with now unfortunately. I got back into Annonaceae and am wanting to see if I can find out what variety of Cherimoya or Atemoya the fruits might have been so I can relocate the plant and grow it again.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annonaceae seed viability
« on: May 09, 2021, 02:43:18 PM »
So I am debating on whether or not to buy some Annona dioica seeds that were harvested in February of this year. In the past I have had good luck with fresh Annonaceae seeds but those bought from places like Tradewindsfruits or Rarepalmseeds never sprouted. I know Annona dioica is from the cerrado/pantanal so it should not be as finicky as say muricata, salzmannii, scleroderma etc, but a couple months still could make or break viability right? Do yall think the rarer Annona seeds keep good viability for a couple months? I plan on scouring and using GA3 if I get them as well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Maesobotrya barteri
« on: July 11, 2017, 11:27:16 PM »
I sprouted M. barteri successfully about 5 months ago and I've managed to survive 1 seedling, but everytime it grows leaves they turn brown and die, only to grow more and repeat the same process. The main stem is still alive and it keeps growing new leaves but I cant figure out for the life of me why they keep dying. I have the seedling in a ziplock bag to replicate the high jungle humidity but could this be too much humidity?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Goji Berry Pruning
« on: July 14, 2016, 01:16:37 PM »
I've had a Crimson Sweet goji berry now for about 3-4 years now. It has fruited for the past 2 years very sparsely. It is planted in semi shade in ground with regular soil enhanced with manure and compost. It has gone NUTS. It's growing all over the place without much reason. When is the best time to prune my goji berry and is there a shape/technique to use?

Hello, does anyone have for sale some of the seeds from rare african fruits such as Dacryoides edulis, Aframomum, Allanblackia gabonensis, Thaumatococcus daniellii, Treculia africana, Strychnos spinosa, Pseudospondias microcarpum, Mammea africana, Irvingia gabonensis, Garcinia livingstonei, Myrianthus holsti, and/or others for sale in the US or could someone be a link to some of the African importers? I still haven't been responded to from the USDA about the permit and I am getting restless. Also, does anyone have seeds for Holstedtia species, Annona scleroderma and Inga laurina. I can buy or trade, please and thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Climbing ylang ylang
« on: July 06, 2016, 10:01:06 PM »
Are the fruits of the climbing ylang ylang(Artabotrys hexapetalus) edible? They look like they have a decent amount of juicy pulp and as they are an Annona relative, if their fruit is edible I would think it might be quite tasty.

This is the fruit as seen on the Rare Palm Seeds website:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to grow kola nuts from seed?
« on: July 05, 2016, 09:23:58 PM »
I recently bought a bag of fresh kola nuts from a local African market and am wondering how to grow them from seeds. I know they need high heat and humidity and do well in light potting mix enriched with manure but should I soak them first, how deep to plant them, how long will it take to sprout etc? I also got a ton of fresh raw cacao nibs and I think these are easier, just plant about an inch deep after soaking in seed starting mix enriched with manure and keep above 80 degrees and high humidity, this I learned as my grandpa(nanabanyin) owns a cacao plantation in Ghana. Any info is appreciated, thank you! ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona Sutenofira/Stenophylla?
« on: August 30, 2015, 01:06:40 PM »
Has anyone heard of this plant? Annona Stenophylla or the semi-vinning annona? It's from Southern Africa, also called dwarf custard apple and sold for over 400 usd on this website...http://www.gmo-toku.jp/item/75864890/%5B%E8%B6%85%E5%B8%8C%E5%B0%91%E3%83%90%E3%83%B3%E3%83%AC%E3%82%A4%E3%82%B7%E7%A7%91%E7%86%B1%E5%B8%AF%E6%9E%9C%E6%A8%B9%E3%83%BB%E3%83%89%E3%83%AF%E3%83%BC%E3%83%95%E3%82%AB%E3%82%B9%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E3%83%89%E3%82%A2%E3%83%83%E3%83%97%E3%83%AB%5D%E3%82%A2%E3%83%B3%E3%83%8E%E3%83%8A%E3%83%BB%E3%82%B9%E3%83%86%E3%83%8E%E3%83%95%E3%82%A3%E3%83%A9%28Annona+stenophylla%29%E8%8B%97/  Here are some pics Is this the same thing as A. Senegalensis? They claim it's two different plants and I've found some other info on it. Has anyone grown or seen this plant? *Neither the pictures nor plants belong to me, just using them for educational/asking purposes.
