15 and 25 gal plants...should I lay on side pointing potentially doenwind...maybe loop together with rope?

Someone told me they wanted to plant a mango tree just for the shade aspect, as they loved the look of a full grown mango tree.  What are recommendations for fastest growing types?  Not concerned on fruit taste, quality etc.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Experience with Melaleuca mulch?
« on: May 31, 2017, 06:58:40 AM »
Picked up a couple bags at Lowe's for a small project we are working on at a neighbor's house. Looks like some good mulch, with the added benefit of using the remains of a problematic species to grow more of the good stuff. Anyone had any long term comments on the stuff?

After the Manatee Fruit Council sale, I responded to a nearby lychee fruit sale ad and the guy had 4 absolutely beautiful 25 ft lychee trees and incredible mango trees full of fruit in his yard. He planted them 20 years ago and they were really something to see. All organic and he only uses oak mulch from a friend.  I live in Fort Myers so trying to find a closer  source. Any ideas?

Oh and his Mauritius lychees were fantastic!

To avoid the hectic atmosphere, are any vendors out there who will be offering persimmon trees and can direct me to their booth?  PM is ok or just post here.

Looking to find which vendors may have the following items---
Atemoya
Black Sapote
Jujube
Sugar Apple
Pineapples

If you are a vendor heading there and will have these varieties, please PM me and I would like to head right to your booth. It gets kind of crazy inside and hopefully I will get a shot at a few of these. Last couple sales have been great. Thanks in advance--

Curious as to availability of photos of larger (est) trees holding some of the newer and newest varieties---we've all seen large Haden and TA trees, but how about some of the largest trees holding Venus, Lemon Zest, Sweet Tart, Maha Chanok and more that might be out there?  I suppose some varieties have not yet seen their maximum size but would be interesting to see how varieties are actually performing.

Wondering if any of the Florida fruit stands are offering this season's fruits yet?  Mangoes, avocados or otherwise?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rain barrel and city water
« on: May 04, 2016, 08:09:54 AM »
So I am seeing salt deposit and possibly chlorine effects on the leaves of my potted tropicals and want to switch over to a rain barrel system.  I have read several posts on letting city water sit for at least 24 hrs which will dissipate the chlorine. In lieu of nice steady rains to keep it full, can I use city water to refill the barrel as needed if the water sits for the time period described?  Any other concerns to think about?

« on: March 29, 2016, 07:38:36 AM »
Does anyone have a series of photos showing the mango lifecycle from bloom to harvest?  This is my first year with an opportunity to harvest some fruit and wondered if anyone has captured the process in pictures?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / September Fertilizing questions
« on: September 01, 2015, 07:51:08 AM »
So I read that today is probably the last time to fertilize mangos, how about September and October fertilizing of others--lychee, avocados, jackfruit, caimito etc.? Any general rules for the rest of the warm season?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What is this on my Mango?
« on: August 01, 2015, 05:49:40 PM »
I did look around on the forum but couldn't find a comparable picture of these white spots on my Nam Doc Mai leaves. Seems to be small white spots congregated--can anyone give some insight on this and how to treat it?

Hello everyone--this is the same nursery I first posted about last month. Due to the sudden passing of the owner, the family is working to sell out their stock of plants. About 100+ various mangoes, sapodilla, a couple lychee trees, figs, avocados plus another huge assortment of palms---royal, foxtail, sylvestors, canary and Bismarcks.  3 gal Fruit trees starting at $30 less 50% and available in sizes up to 65 gal.  Bring your truck, limited help in loading, but they will see what they can do if you need to arrange to return for pickup. I saw NDM, Glen, VP, Carrie, Kent, Keitt, PSM and more in the mangoes---nothing exotic but nice trees with a chance to start or add to your collection at a great price and for a great cause.

Sale starts at 930am sharp this Saturday Aug 1   3220 SW Pine Island Rd Cape Coral---SW corner of Pine Island Rd and Burnt Store Rd

Don't miss the Mango Mania festival this weekend in Cape Coral celebrating the local Mango industry---lots of tropical fruit, fruit trees and more. Sat 10-7 and Sun 10-5pm.  Tickets are $6.00 and based on the early morning news coverage there will be quite a few vendors and a lot to see.

Many people are familiar with the tropical fruit stand and nursery near the SW corner of Pine Island Rd and Burnt Store Rd in Cape Coral/Matlacha. Steve B the long time proprietor there passed away unexpectedly last month and his wife and sister are busy selling off the inventory. Steve was a great dedicated grower and he will be missed. They have a wide selection of tropical fruit trees up to 65 gal and many type of palms as well. A great opportunity if you are looking for some well cared for specimens. Sale is today July 3 and tomorrow July 4th. Please stop in!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / mango rootstock and seedlings
« on: June 08, 2015, 07:01:46 AM »
Great forum with lots of information. Being relatively new to the fruit  growing world I have a question on mango rootstock and seedlings. If I graft the scions from known varieties of seedlings to the recommended rootstock, will I end up with the original seedlings plant variety when it reaches maturity?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Basics of Drip Irrigation
« on: May 12, 2015, 07:33:13 PM »
Putting together the drip system for my tropical fruit container orchard is the fun part--now to figure how how much to water.  Are there any guidelines for mangoes and avocados in the various size pots of 7 gal / 15 gal and 25 gal ?  Times per week, gallons per watering etc. or would a better method be using a soil moisture meter?  I am a newbie here but wanting to get the right information from the start. Any input is appreciated!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Recent uppotting is giving me problems
« on: May 10, 2015, 09:57:36 PM »
Just picked up a 3 gallon Pickering about 2 weeks ago and up potted into a 25 gallon container of good well drained potting soil. The weather has been especially hot and windy of late and I am afraid I seeing the beginning of leaf burn. I now know the up potting was a couple steps too large, and I went ahead and moved back into a 7 gallon pot and moved it out of direct sun. I think the up potting combined with the hot dry air has caused the issue. I hope I caught it early but anyone have ideas of what else I may need to do?  I am not familiar with foliar sprays--is there a topic thread that can cover this in detail if this is what I need?
