Interesting fruit. What does the fruit taste like?  Where does it grow? Shoreline? Foothills?  Mountains?  What Does the tree look like?  There isn't much information available on this garcinia species.

Hi friends
This fruit is from the estate of Philip in Las Mary PR .
He was Garcinas lover , had more than 15 species of Garcinia , but died in March.
It looks like Garcinia Pungara .
He had Pungara and said the Pungara and Rusty were different fruits.
Its flavor is sweeter than achachairu and does not feel the sour taste of achachairu .
Thanks
Abimael

How old and big is the tree these fruit came from?  Of the 15 Garcinia species that Philip grew do you know which one was his favorite?

Thanks
Bill

abimael you might have to go back and get some more seeds as they look like a winner and sweet as well. Even if you have to hurdle the fence at night and watch out for dogs. Just kidding but as the last generation of serious collectors pass away much is being lost and the original sources of their seeds can longer be found much of the time.It has happened here many times where the inheritors of collections do not value the trees as highly. It reminds me a little of the Durio macrantha story as well.

That tree must be over 25 years and measures more than 24 feet .
It really is not which was the favorite Garcinia  of Philip ( Felipe ).

Mike
I think it would be a good idea to go at night to find a few fruits , but there is a problem with snakes if afraid of them and in that area there are many Burmese boas

OK.  So the tree is about 25 years old and more than 24 feet tall.  How wide would you say the tree is?

And to be clear you are saying this species Rusty was not Philips favorite variety of Garcinia.  Do you know which variety was his favorite?

I would say it has as 15 to 18 feet wide.
The truth is I do not know which is  his favorite Garcinia , and now the man is dead.

This species along with other unidentified garcinia was brought to Puerto Rico from Ecuador per Sadhu

Felipes tree will not be only source

What does Sadhu say about the quality of the fruit?  Does anyone else have any information regarding this species?  Has anyone else in the forum tasted or seen this fruit before?

Abimael I wrestle 16 feet amethystine pythons in my yard at night all the time.Boas should be chicken feed, or is that the other way around? We have to keep an eye out for taipans here. It is worth it for quality seeds unless there are guard dogs of course but you could take a friend to distract them while you get the seeds.

From what I 've seen here in PR no one has more species of Garcinias that Sadhu , he should know , but the problem is to communicate with him . I took more than a year trying to communicate with him and could not. Felipe also bought seeds from Ecuador to Jim West . So this Garcinia must be of Ecuador.

Hey Bill ,

I have tried the fruit before and is pretty good , similar to achachairu and bigger in size. Growimg conditions dont no to much because all I got are small plants. They seen to like partial shade.  For me is a winner and a most have. I know it as pungara but oh well.
