Wild Artocarpus from Sarawak, Borneo (eBay)
« on: July 21, 2012, 09:03:07 AM »
Here is a link to ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200795578175#ht_2161wt_1106

That merchant is selling occasionally fruits originated from Sarawak, Borneo
it is not cheap, but that seller is very communicative  and reliable

In that case:
maybe a bit off season small good tasting jackfruit
If I'll get more information it will be added here later
Or you can try and contact him trough eBay

from the photo provided at his shop at eBay
it seems that the fruit peals easy, and has amber yellow arils
maybe it is integer, hybrid, or just misshaped(I lack the experience to be more decisive)

If someone has any remarks, he is very welcome to ad them.

Amaqeq like the call of the siren it is easy to be lured by promise.Wild jackfruit from Borneo? Wild man of Borneo maybe and wikld jackfruit of the western ghats possibly. It looks more like a chempadak and if it were turned around to show whether a ring around the stem is present you wpould have a better idea.Even if it were right it would be wrong.Artocarpus from Borneo may have less cold hardiness than from drier and cooler locations.I reckon named cultivars known to do alright outside the wet equatorial areas might be preferable for you.

He also has Wild Borneo Rollinias. In fact many of his offerings start with the name Wild Borneo. But my favorite was the part about the Wild Borneo jackfruit tasting like Ice Cream.

Thank you for the insight
what you are both saying through trace of sarcasm and pinch of mockery is a bit grim
although possibly true
that is however good indicator for most tropic seed traders

if you were trying to buy artocarpus seeds lately you would have found that
the big majority of sellers are dealing with snake oil
from that aspect the seller from eBay is relatively better than many others
and you shouldn't judge him so roughly

I regard You Oscar as an exception in that trade, exception to the best
but the majority rule will offer A pig in a poke as a standard
most sellers are very generous with descriptions of taste :
ice cream, banana gum, and many others I don't even take it into consideration
However when it comes to description of the seed source
facts becoming very fluid
the answer of Recommended tropical seed seller in that forum to basic question
about his artocarpus seeds was:
"sorry I cannot help you"
that answer is the rule not the exception.

Mike You know that I want to try and establish a small jackfruit orchard
But I also want to get some exercise with that plant beforehand,
to see how it cope with the soil  temperatures and humidity conditions
I acquired few dozen seeds of Jackfruit and his close relatives from variable places
to get as much diversity as possible, not expecting those seedlings to go pass 1 or two years
I do not have yet seeds that are good enough to consider as a backbone worthy of the investment of time and labor required to maintain even small orchard
as for seed sources, I'm not coming from a place of plenty
You'll be amazed how different things looks from here.

Your rapport with the vendor is indeed very important. So if you have good communication with them that is a very good sign. My recommendation is, as always with new vendors, to make a small trial order. If all goes well you can later make more. Also eBay has a guarantee that you will receive the product, and that it is as described. If you're not 100% satisfied you will get a full refund. So that's also good to keep in mind. I've ordered from vendors on eBay myself. Some can be quite good. Unfortunately most of them don't have experience in sending to places that have strict agricultural rules. So you might want to help them with that.

ameqeq sorry for my sarcasm and no one around here laughs at my bad jokes. With chempadak there is a vietnamese lemony one with hardiness that tastes great, malaysian honey, little smooth orange fleshed and large big bulbed malaysian yellow that would be great to get an try. With Jacks NS1,the J's,thai lemon, black gold and one or 2 philipine and southern australian types are worth a crack and amber is something special. In 4 or 5 months I'll post some pix of most of these if they fall into my possession.

I have been watching these listings as well and have been wondering to the authenticity of the product my self. I have been burnt before on ebay more then once when it comes to seeds. A lot of the time I will get rare seeds that just will not germinate and if I am spending $30.00usd for 3 seeds they better damn well germinate! Keep us posted if you do decide to purchase some of his seeds and let us know what the success rate of germination is.
