New variety of mango
« on: January 28, 2017, 01:37:48 PM »
I've heard that when you grow mango from seed you can sometimes get new hybrids, and I have this mango tree that I grew from seed that gives us really sweet and fiberless mangoes and I could never identify which variety it is, so I came to the conclusion that it might be a new variety

Congratulations!  What are you going to call it?  What variety did the seed come from?

I'm still thinking of the name, but I got the seed from a neighbor who brought it from Mexico but the variety it came from is unknown

I have seen that mango before. Such a nice shape. It is called the Schutzie mango.

I dont think it's a manila since the seed came from an unknown variety in Mexico, and I planted a seed from this unknown variety and the leaves came out a lot bigger than the parent tree

Schutzie
If you look in the archives I have dozens similar trees for Mexico- East, West Coast. I prefer the Mexican East Coast manila seedlings they are true to seeds

They do look similar, when these turn ripe though they stay green with a little bit of yellow

Anytime you plant a mango tree, from a mono-embryonic seed, you end up with something unique.  "a new variety " but to be considered worthy of being a named cultivar, really depends if it has any unique merits.

there is nothing wrong with this,  it's how many varieties we know of today, came into existence,  a chance seedling, that is somewhat improved over the parent(s). it might be 1 in 1000 but it happens.

How many years did it take for your Schutzie mango tree to bear fruit? Nice orange flesh in your photos! Yellow flesh connotes more acidic.

The tree started to fruit around 5 years old
