Can you air-layer a Longan?
« on: March 04, 2017, 01:25:52 AM »
Hello, I was wondering if it's possible to air-layer a longan, because I have an aunt who has this huge tree that produces very good longans and I was hoping to clone it.

"Yes"; according to California Rare Fruit Growers' Plant Propagation Chart; "Common
commercial method".

I haven't done it myself, so, good luck!   :)

While it can be grafted (and have seen it done but on a very limited scale), air layering is the most common method of propagating longans.

Go ahead and put on a few airlayers in case your friends want one as well. Should be ready to cut off in June/July. Longan could be tricky though if it's the first time you've done it.

Rob, you said you have seen Longan being grafted what type of graft was used on what you saw? Thanks ;)

Do you know why he wrapped plastic around the peeled branch, instead of applying rooting powder?

I'm not sure which part your're asking.
1. Why did he wrap the peeled branch?
I'm not sure. Maybe this keeps the cambium from bridging the gap somehow.
2. Why didn't he apply rooting powder?
It's not clear if he scraped the cambium off. If he did, there's no point in applying rooting power on the peeled area, since there's nothing there to grow roots from. If you want to apply rooting hormone, apply it on the cut at the air-layer end. It might grow fast enough that hormone is not necessary. I've never done citrus before but longan grows roots fairly quickly.

Thanks fyliu. I did the air layered on longan in OCtober, but have not seen any roots. I should open the wrapper to check inside. Maybe in two weeks.

I've never seen someone wrapping the peeled branch either. The only thing I do is scrape the peeled branch to the wood and often slice some of the wood off all around to make sure I got everything.

How wide did you make the gap? Well, I'm sure you'll figure out what's wrong once you examine it and do much better after you cover it back up.

plastic wrap around the branch, make bark does not back together, root will grow

Thanks Ana. So it's to prevent bridging.
