Wondering about Mangoes from 2011
« on: August 01, 2012, 05:34:40 PM »
Cam anyone read some of these strange sharpie names or determine what types of mangoes these are from back in 2011.  I'm familiar with most, but there's a few I'm wondering about.

I remember them each tasting very unique (Glen/malika being the best), with one of the more elongated mangoes (i think the one all the way to the right) having a strong taste (like the smell of model airplane glue)...I've had a few mangoes that reminded me of this taste since...I'm trying to avoid these cultivars in the future.

Has anyone tasted what I'm talking about?

thanks

They all seem to be fairly legible other than the large green one at the upper left.....which could be many things.  Oh, never mind, now I see  that it is Mallika. Where did you get them/the picture?  The names are spelled differently than I am used to seeing.  For example I am assuming:

Pin sen man= Pim saen mun

Tong Py Kum= Tog Bi con

Never heard of Gu long Okrung, but the rest are all well known....Haden, Chocanon, Florigon, and Glen.

I have one that came to me as Falang.....not sure if this is the same as Fralan.  Frankly it is larger looking than mine. I don't get the smell of airplane glue.....the scent/odor strikes my nose differently.

Isn't Gu Long Okrung = Okrung? That's one i have. I'll try using that one next time i get the hankering to put a model plane together.  ;)
What is Fralan Thunder? Never heard of that one?

Oscar falan means thinder in thai I think. If memory serves me correctly it relates to the fact that they are ready when the 'thunder season' is on during the build up to the monsoon.

Falang/farang means guava and western folk are called this because their skin is white like the inside of a guava. Many of the thai names mean something.Sam ru du is the 3 seasons mango for example.
