fruit pickup at Truly Tropical
« on: August 05, 2012, 03:12:25 PM »
Hi,

I dropped by Truly Tropical yesterday and picked up these fruits. My first time I ate longan. Nice flavorful fruit. And that's Valencia Pride mangoes.

Why do people pick carambola at such an unripe stage??

Hi,

The whitish one is Fwang Tung. The yellow one is Bell. I was told they are both ripe and with different color hue because of different varieties.

Tomas a friend swapped some of his fwang tung for my giant siam yesterday and they were big (1.3lbs) and quite green, never really going orange for both types.his fwangs were like propellers with wavy blades and are seedless.Longans are very morish and the more you eat the better you like them.

Both picked early to have a longer "shelf life".
Tomas, it is time to come back to Fort Myers, and taste ripe carambola from the tree!

Hi Mike,

The longan was Kohala. It was my very first so I have nothing to compare with.

On starfruits picked too early like that it's good to slice the green ribs off. Otherwise you'll get a mouthful of oxalic acid.

I've liked starfruits that fell off the tree. Had to cut away some parts but all sweetness. No sour or oxalic acid. Far better an over ripe star than under ripe which is all you ever see in the supermarket

Tomas,
Just let me know in advance!  It will be a pleasure to host you and your family!
Kohala is good and Biew Kiew is better, to my taste!

I know the two varieties are two totally different colors however they are still both a bit underripe.  The Fwang Tung should not have as much green and the Bell should be a very deep orange, much darker than the fruit in your picture, with very little green.  A lot of people pick carambola a little underripe cause they are less delicate and hold up better for sale...problem is you sacrifice flavor and quality when doing so.  The flavor difference, taste and sweetness, is remarkable when picked fully ripe,  There are also some negative health issues when eating them "green".

The color at ripeness is different between varieties. My B10 goes very orange but can be eaten rather green due to the low oxalic acid.Giant siam barely goes yellow even when very ripe.Fwang tung has a little less oxalic acid along the wing edges than most.

While I can't speak for varieties not available here, or at least readily available, I can speak for what is commonly sold here in the US, specifically SFla, and both those Bell and Fwang Tung are underripe.
