Eugenia calycina 'Nelita'
« on: May 18, 2017, 05:16:55 PM »
Dear friends
Yesterday, 17th of May, was my wife’s birthday, and I gave her one very special "Fruity" gift…
I’ve decided to identify my world-famous cultivar of Eugenia calycina with big and tasty fruits after her name.
As discoverer and worldwide introducer of this great cultivar to the "fruit fanatics" world I believe I'm entitled to do so.
My wife’s name is Manuela but amongts friends and family we often use the nickname “Nelita” … and that’s the fancy name I’ve chosen for this cultivar.
So, my dear friends, from now on, please refer to this variety as Eugenia calycina 'Nelita'

Happy birthday "Nelita"

I feel that even the plant agrees with this name because it ripened the first fruit of the season right on time for Nelita's birthday... and I also think this was the biggest fruit I've ever had on this tree... here it is on Nelita's hand.

Happy birthday, indeed, Nelita!

Does this mean you're going to start chopping little sticks off Nelita and mailing them around the world for grafting?

Hi Joe
I definitly will start trying to graft this cultivar soon...I'm growing some plants for rootstocks now... If I succeed I will then offer grafted plants for sale... fingers crossed!

I have 4 seedlings of your "Nelita" cultivar grown from seed you provided to me last year.
Those pictures of the fruits give me something to dream about for the future.
Thanks again!

Kevin

I'd love to see more of your greenhouse. Maybe a tour video? You've got such an impressive Eugenia collection after all.

+1, and it would be nice to stop the camera at some leaves (for comparing species or cultivars) or fruits, thanks, amazing video and photos.

Nice! Will finally label them. ;)
What have you noticed as far as preferred water requirements/needs of 'Nelita' seedlings? I'm wondering if I'm over watering mine.
thanks

I noticed fruiting season is also longer than the regular Rio grande ,  @ acoff87, I have been watering mine every 2 days more or less , the fruits get bigger but less sweet compared to an other Rio that I have right next to it .
I don't know if y'all will agree but my experience specially with Eugenia and Citrus is that once they are almost ready withholding water will make them sweeter .

Finally... a great use for all those Pitangatuba seedlings I have.
I've been grafting Calycinas to Rio Grands... but this open up other possibilities I never considered!

Congrats Stevo! Impressive!
