Green Sapote Tree
« on: February 07, 2012, 11:43:07 AM »
Hello Friends,

Here is a Green Sapote that I got in a Trade with Jack about 1.5 years ago.  Hopefully your Jackfruit is doing just as well as my Green Sapote.....Thanks again my friend!

As you can from the pictures below,  the tree is do Fantastic.  When I got the tree, it was probably 1.5' - 2 Feet tall.  Now it is about 8' - 9' Feet tall in the Pot, and doing Great.  This is a Seedling and is probably about 3 years old, maybe 4 years old.....  The tree is pretty tall but has several lateral branches and looks like it is, and will continue to put out new horizontal-type growth.  This tree has been outside for almost it entire life, inlcuding this Winter and a couple of days with below 30 degree weather and came out just fine, absolutely no damage.  This has been the case for the past couple of Winters so it seems to be pretty cold hardy.

Anyone have any Scions from a Grafted/Named Cultivar that they wouldn't mind sharing?

Thanks,

Jacob

Jacob,

Nice looking tree!  It is good to hear about the cold hardiness, as I planted one outside (pantin variety IIRC).  It is surviving the winter but does look a bit ragged, I am hoping it will turn around when  spring comes around.

Your tree is looking great Jacob!  My in ground tree has had some of it's newest growth burned (I get colder than Jacob does) but the hardened off stuff is just fine.  I also have one in a pot in the GH, both from Jack.  Do you give yours full sun?

Hey Ethan,

My Green Sapote is probably from the same batch as your Green Sapote.  Jack is Great, when he brought it over to my house, I swear it looked Fake.  It was in absolutely perfect condition, not 1 blemish and ultra-green. It has pretty much been in full sun since I got the plant. It has been outside on the coldest of nights and no signs of damage.  I was told from Jack that they were definitely more cold hardy than the Mamey Sapote and that they essentially tasted the same, just that the Green Sapote was better than the Mamey.

SWRancher & Rtreid - Thanks for the Nice words.

This tree is growing so quickly. As soon as it warms up, I am sure it will take off once again.  Who knows, maybe I won't have to wait 10 years to get some fruit.  I will also try and take some better pictures, the ones posted were taken at night under poor conditions.

Thanks Again,

Jacob

Jacob, I dont think there is too much "named" varieties of Green Sapote.  We just have the one from TREC here in South Florida.   We do graft the green sapote TREC variety onto mamey sapote rootstock for our limerock soil.

Here we have a cultivar named Makawao, also sometimes called Bullock. Almost all other trees are seedlings.
Are those GS plants in California by any chance coming from Ben Poirier? I have been sending him GS seed through the years.

If I remember correctly, I think he told me that he got the seeds from Hawaii.  I think Ethan is right, in saying that he got them from Oscar.

So Oscar, are these seeds from the Makawao?  Is it from this variety that you send out seeds?  Or from other seedling trees.  Do you ever eat the fruit from the Green Sapoted seeds you send out?  If so, how are they?

Thanks,

Jacob

The seeds i've sent none are from the Makawao trees. They are mostly from progeny of trees at our experimental station. There are two types, a round and an elongated shaped type:

Jacob that's a beauty! Have you seen Roger Meyer's 20 year old Green Sapote seedling, it's huge?? He told me it used to flower heavily but it never fruited. I have a grafted GS that's has been growing steadily but not half as vigorous as yours. Someday I will put it on the ground. Here is a pics it's probably pushing 4'.

Hey?!

I got a green sapote cultivar from a really nice grower in South FL....it's called Whitman...I suppose old Willy Whitman had it....notorious for getting the best of the best if he could....I've also heard there was a study done on the brix level, of the fruits of this cultivar "whitman", and it was off the meat rack sweet!!!

I am willing to share budwood at a later date, but my two trees need to grow a little before I cut them...so maybe ready to distribute budwood in August of this year, fruit Gods willing...

i've heard its just the tree that whitman fruited at his house...not really a cultivar that went through any trials...but apparently it has a very high brix, according to one study I've seen published....(its posted on the forum somewhere I believe).

I've been impressed with my trees so far...they have grown like crazy.  I have them in a greenhouse, in deep shade (not by choice)...and surprisingly one of the trees is flowering.

Can green sapote fruit in ultratropics? I have one 5 feet seedling, but now I'm having my doubts after articles like this: www.skyfieldtropical.com/encyclopedia/green-sapote/   They encourage grafting on something else in order to fruit in lowlands. I know it fruits for Oscar on Big Island, but their winter median is quite cool.

I think green sapote is a more widely adapted tree than mamey sapote, both to colder and hotter climates. Green sapote fruits well in Southern Florida where temperatures are a lot higher than here. So i think it will fruit in ultra tropical climates. But  it might be true that fruit set will be better if grafted onto mamey sapote rootstock in ultra tropics. I would recommend that you try both ways.

Haha.., as if Mamey seeds are readily available anywhere in Asia to do experiments :)  I had 3 green sapotes. One died, one lost after unsuccessful graft.  I'm going to ride with remaining one all the way and see what happens.

Beautiful green sapote, Jacob!

I have a special place for GS. I love mamey so much that green sapote is  a tree that I am especially excited about successfully fruiting!

Here's my green sapote!  It's  very tall and it never shows any burn in the winter (even with the arctic freeze this past december)

So green sapote grows in nothern california!   What we can do is trade scions when they start flowering/fruiting. From everything I've learned, there are next to no named cultivars of green sapote-- A perfect opportunity for us to develop our own!

Someone else mention green sapote flowering and never fruiting. Maybe a multigrafted GS (even of unnamed varieties) would have a better chance of setting fruit, This is something to consider!

Doesn't sound like an insurmountable obstacle. Can mail you some mamey sapote seeds, or you take some back with you next time you're in USA.

Yep, seeds from Oscar.  Glad to see they are doing well.  I have them scattered all over Nipomo property and in GH.  Outside they are in the ground, not very happy.  GH ones are doing well.  Seems like the outside ones do better in the semishade.  Part of an experiment.  Been in Mexico for several months and still another month, so do not know what this cold dry winter has done to the plants.  We will see in March.

thanks!!

Believe it or not, I sold that mamey tree to pay some bills!

I don't know where it is now, but I hope it's doing well.

I'm ready to try growing some on inverted roots to see if they fruit in a pot easily!

I'm hoping to graft up a small batch this year.

If green sapote seedlings survive in my soil, then I may likely attempt to graft onto them.  I am looking to get the benefit of the improved cold tolerance, by grafting green sapote onto green sapote rootstock (vs mamey).

Hi Everyone,

I just picked up a beautiful specimen of a green sapote from Norman Beard's place for $65.

It is loaded with blooms and was just transplanted because it is root bound(could this have induced the blooming?)

Very nice tree indeed, I am hoping to set some fruits on it.

Jack,

Can you report on how your green sapotes have fared? Also, is there a post where you detail what was and what wasn't badly damaged when you had the low of 19F? I'm thinking specifically about cherimoya, jaboticaba, and dragonfruit (if you were growing it at the time). Thanks!

Lost all green sapotes except 2 in the shade under trees, and 2 outside that are now growing out.  They are about 3-4 ft tall.  One in greenhouse (unheated, low was 30 degrees) is fine, about 6 ft tall.  Cherimoyas, none lost, some minor branch damage, jaboticabas had no damage, never has.  Worst was avocados as we lowered water controller for winter rains while we spent 4 months in Mexico.  No rain.  Severe damage, loss of large limbs, avos coming back, will be using a chain saw.  50 variety collection of small avos is fine as they were on different controller.  Drought plus freeze, plus 105 degree temps a week or so ago has challenged some plants.  In actuality, not much lost or damaged that a good rainy season won't fix.  I expected worse reading news while in Mexico.

How is your green sapote doing? Has it fruited for you ?
