What to plant next? Lend me your knowledge.....south florida
« on: March 09, 2013, 11:24:37 PM »
Ok need ideas, have plenty of room and want to get some new stuff growing. im located in Hollywood, Florida with a lake front property of which a section often floods in summer. The list of presently growing is as follows.
lychee, lokwat, mamey, pink quava, jackfruit, sugar apple, meyer lemon, key lime, soursop, sapodilla, mulberry, sour orange, bannana, pappaya, passion fruit( currently working on several species), fig, mango, avacado, Barbados cherry,..... I think that's it
species in consideration are:
Abiu - seems to be a definite, i need to track down some seeds
llama
biriba - not sure how well it would do
jaboticaba - for the area that occasionally floods
icecream bean - for the same area
wax jambu or maley apple - never tasted, not sure id even want it.
white sapote - sounds cool
Garcinia family - no idea where to find any or what will fruit
Any thoughts, anything i missed, or opinions please share
thank you

Jabos for the area that can flood is a given.  Mangoes would also do fine there also.

If you like Annonas, Ilama would be a great choice but finding one may be a bit difficult...or at least you will have to wait for availability.  Excalibur should hopefully have a few available but probably not for a couple months.  I would warn you, if you are not a collector or flat out Annona lover, from most of the retail customers who taste the fruit, it is not a majority loved fruit.  I have found it is either like it or hate it, very little in the middle.

Abiu is a smart choice though you may want to taste it prior to dedicating time, money and space on it.

Others to go for, in no particular order:
White Sapote
Green Sapote
Ross Sapote
Canistel
Longan
Caimito
Atemoya
Macadamia
Carambola

You may also ant to consider multiple varieties of some you already have to both expand seasons and give a varietal of choices.

Come up to Excalibur (Lake Worth) on a Saturday and ask for me and I will be glad to show you whats available and help you out.

I agree with bsbullie on expanding on varieties of actual species. For example, some Wax Jambu varieties (to me) have a slightly bitter aftertaste which some members of my family dislike. Other varieties (Tub Tim) are not bitter at all and taste similar to peak-of-summer watermelon. When chilled, they are so refreshing I could eat those all day!

Choose your varieties wisely for both flavor and length of harvest season.

Besides fruit trees I would consider a vegetable garden. Perhaps you already have one.

It looks like you're missing Dragon Fruit (Pitaya)

I've seen it mentioned in this forum that the variety American Beauty is sweet and recommended.

I only have the David Bowie variety and it has'nt fruited yet. I chose this variety because it was said that it was productive and of excellent taste.
'Virtue' should be taught, learned and propagated, in order to save others and oneself.

ill look into American beauty, sounds good. I was planing on trying the yellow variety for flavor. but also growing one of the tastier self pollinate varieties. Such as physical graffiti, purple haze, etc.

The yellow grows slow as a turtle and has small spiny fruit.  The others you mention will fruit from a large cutting in a year or less..

From my experiences with the Yellow, stay away from it unless you want to use it to make crosses.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

The upside is yellow will set fruit all by itself. It's also easier to rot in high heat and humidity and farmers in the tropics graft them onto white dragonfruit.

Wow great responses, okay good to know stay away from the yellow ha. As far as Pitaya I have about five varities i was looking into. David Bowie, Delight, Natural Mystic, Purple Haze, and physical gaffiti. Looking for a self fruiting / Pollinator with a good flavor.
Yes we have a peach, been a favorite since we purchased it, grew so fast. Also fruited well the first season we had it.
Tried a blueberry didn't do so hot, not very interested in grape though.
I'm a big fan of Annona's so really want to taste a biriba, And find a tree. As well as Abiu always thought they were very cool.
Want to also get a Nom Dac Mai mango there my favorite and apparently stay small that's a plus.

Luc's Garcina sp. recommend from what I have read and seen the pics of. Also Lisa Atemoya is a good pick.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
