Anyone interested in cranberry hibiscus seeds
« on: March 26, 2013, 10:35:45 PM »
These are not fruit tree seeds, but I have loads of cranberry hibiscus ( hibiscus acetosella) seeds. The leaves taste tangy and mix with salads well.  I got the plant from Echo in Fort Meyers last summer, its herbaceous not woody and mine grew eight feet from late July until the beginning of cooler weather, at which time the leaves went bland as well.

Do the leaves taste anything like cranberries, or does the name refer to the flower color or smell?

I don't think the cranberry has any relations with the taste and only maybe the color of the seed pods or color of the plants. Pan dulce can correct me if i'm wrong. Like the gongura (Hibiscus sabdariffa) the leaves are use as a vegetable and have a tart/tangy/sour flavor that could be use in salad, soup, stir fires, pickles, etc. My parents grows the gongura, so I know that the leaves are very tart/sour, but quite good in fish dishes.

Thao, your right, the the whole plant is a dark red color, and the leaves have a tangy/tart/sour taste.  Cranberry hibiscus is just the common name.

I got the plant from ECHO, and here is the link

Pam;  I am doing research on cranberry hibiscus and would greatly appreciate it if you still have some of the ECHO seeds. I saw them several years ago when I visited the farm, but most do not have that variety of plant.   cfarrell@trevecca.edu
