Looks very tasty. Do you know the cultivar of the one you tasted today? How do you compair the texture to the mamey? Do you have any seeds you could sell/trade?

That green sapote was from a seedling tree. Taste and texture amazingly good given that this is not an improved variety. Think how long the mamey sapote has been worked on to get it as good as it is! I should have green sapote seeds available in about 2-3 weeks. Have scion wood available of Makawao variety all the time.

Hi Oscar :),
The Green sapote really looks like a Mamey sapote, just smaller! Congrats on the flowering Green sapote :)

Thanks for sharing the awesome pics ;D ;D ;D

Oscar......now come on.....you aren't going to give us a preference????  PDG is not going to get it here.  Please tell us which was better and why. Or, at least, what the best or worst attributes were of each as compared to each other. Muchicimas gracias.....in advance. Great pictures BTW.....you do have a really great talent in photography.  This is obvious with all your great works you have posted, but I have never said it, and it needed to be said.

mmmm, think it could have been better.  There is a little glare on those halved fruits....j/k  ;D 8) :-*

Oscar - are your Pantins always that color ?  All of the ones I have had have been a more consistent deeper red color.

I agree with Harry I would like to hear a serious compare and contrast between the two. I have never tried the green sapote before! Looks delicious awesome pics as well.

Here's a foto of the TREC green sapote from Homestead. They are delicious fruits with zero fiber. They are quite smaller than Mamey and the skin is very different.

Today I was at our local market and they were selling large Florida grown Magana Mamey Sapote for $3 per lb.

I can't wait for my GS trees to flowers, thanks for the flower blossom pic, I have something on one of my grafted GS trees I'm really hoping are flowers.... I want to get some makawao  and some lucuma budwood from you as  well as seeds, send me a message and we can set it up.

Steven, the green sapote looks very different from mamey, but only on the exterior. Green sapote is not a very good name as the fruit will turn totally orange when fully ripe. Orange sapote would have been a better name in my opinion. Then again the people that name fruits seem to be color blind, as the real green sapote (Casimiroa) got named white sapote instead!
Harry and Joe, i didn't give a detailed comparison as i had intended to do because the comparison, as it turned out, was a bit unfair; the green sapotes had been refrigerated for a couple days and the pantin was at room temperature. Also i noticed that the 2 green sapote fruits tasted different even though they were from the same tree (one had a bit of an almond taste and the other didn't). So next time i will get a lot more fruits of both the green sapote and the mamey to compare, i think that will be a more realistic comparison. But i can tell you this right now, in a blind taste test i would think any of you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between this green sapote and any superior mamey cultivar. The differences are very subtle. The main difference i noticed was of texture, the green sapotes seemed to be more moist, more juicy. The pantin seemed to have a bit more complex taste with just a tiny bit of tartness not in the GS, but not sure because of refrigeration difference mentioned above. So stay tuned and will try to give better, more impartial comparisons. Thanks for the compliment Harry. Photography has been a hobby of mine a lot longer than gardening. Now with the advent of digital photography it's much easier and cheaper to take good photos. You can take a lot of digital photos until you get the effect you want, without all the expenses and waiting that film photography entailed.
JF, congratulations, those are definitely flowers emerging on your GS. Keep us posted.
Rob, yes i think the Pantins here always turn out that color, but haven't compared many different fruits. They all come from only one farm here that is the only one with commercial planting of mameys. We only have Pantins and Maganas here.

Just did another taste test of green sapote vs. Pantin. Now they were both tasted after refrigeration. It seems to me that the GS has a little bit better texture, a bit more moist and goes down easier. The Pantin might have a very slight edge on taste, but not sure on that yet. Anyway, the differences are extremely subtle. Most people couldn't tell them apart in blind taste test. Both are totally fiberless and totally yummy.

How long will it take for a seedling (Pouteria viridis) to fruit?

Thanks,

Many moons!  Too many to count, probably.  I have seen reports of frutiting in 7-8 years from seed.  I am more of the belief that it is 10-15 years....and perhaps longer.

The perhaps longer applies in my case. I have one very tall GS seedling, over 25 ft., over 15 years old and still hasnt' flowered. But the grafted trees don't break any speed records either!

Truer words were never spoken.  I don't know how long it took for the Whitman tree or the TREC tree to flower and fruit.  Does Whitman's book say anything about that? Or has anyone heard any account of those time periods?

As i said earlier my Makawao grafted trees took 10 years to flower, but then again they were hardly ever fertilized.

Do you need fertilizer for volcanic soil?

Volcanic soil is very rich once the lava has enough time to break down. I'm living on a lava field that formed in 1955. So maybe if i return here in a million years i won't need to fertilize. HAHAHA  Right now it's just mostly rock. Hawaii is one of the newest islands on the planet.

The big rock quarries here do have a machine that pulverizes lava rock, and actually that powder is a VERY good and inexpensive soil ammendment. Maybe as good or better than expensive granite dust people ship in.

Did another taste comparison between Pantin mamey and a seedling green sapote. This time both were unrefrigerated. The green sapote had again better texture, more moist. This time the green sapote won hands down for flavor, having a more complex taste than the Pantin. Both were equally sweet and equally fiberless. I will do a third taste comparison tomorrow to make sure this is fair assesment.
