Temperate Fruit Discussion / pruning apricot tree
« on: March 10, 2020, 01:01:32 PM »
By mistake 7 years ago i planted my only two apricot trees in the most exposed area of my farm. I constandly have stong northen winds and the apricot being the first to bloom losses maybe 80% of its flowers and no bees visit it because of the strong winds. The tree is quite big as i will post tommorow and i get each year maybe 20-30 fruits. This year i tried a different pruning aproach living more central branches in case it helps to protect the flowers. Does anyone had a similar problem? and any suggestions on how to prune it next year?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New plant ideas
« on: March 09, 2020, 12:15:44 PM »
I have a small seaside house at zone 10a. Its 20 m ( 60ft) from sea level and about 100 m ( 330 ft) from the sea. The ground is mostly rocky with some ft of soil. The problem is strong winds with seasalt. I am looking to replace a loquat tree with something else interesting that will cope with the conditions. The loquat tree did fine but the fruit usually gets burned by the salt only a few survive and its just not worth it. I also have had luck with avocado that despite some leaf burn due to salt is doing great. So i am looking for something that has resistance to drought, salt, high winds and is hardy to zone 10a.

« on: March 07, 2020, 02:21:03 AM »
I am about to plant some new plants i bought last fall and i am not familiar with any of those so i dont know if i am making a mistake with the location i have selected for them. The plants i have are 2 lucuma, 2 white sapotes, 2 asimina triloba, 1 yuzu, and some strawberry and lemon guavas. The two locations i am thinking of are

Both are fully protected from wind and the four holes have southern exposure while the other 3 northen and both receive full sunlight with the southern exposure location receiving way more sunlight. Temps in the summer are around 35°C (95°F) with maximum recorded temp the last 5 years 40°C (105°F)
The other option is to find spots in the tree canopy i have

Tropical Fruit Discussion / black sapote question
« on: October 10, 2019, 07:08:22 AM »
I really want to grow and have black sapote fruits but my climate is a little too cold for it. I was wandering if its able to fruit indoors near a large window in a 220lt barrel. Does it need cross pollination? or insect pollination? I am planing to keep it indoors all year

Hello, this and the following year i will plant a small part of my garden (south facing and wind protected slope) with subtropical trees with no protection in the winter (only the first year) the minimum temp last winter which was a cold one was for 2 days night temp of 26°F and daytime 34°F all the other usual winter days temps stay above 45°F.
So far my list considers of
Pummelo (already planted 3 different unknown varieties)
Strawberry guava (already planted)
Various bananas
guabiju
lemon guava
puteria lucuma la molina
white sapote (Mcdill)
white sapote (Dade)
wooly leafed sapote ( Casimiroa Tetrameria)
If anyone here thinks of anything else that can survive or thinks that anything of this list isnt able to survive please sent.
PS my soil is kind of Alkaline with pH 7-7.5 and not so rich in nutrients (for the bananas i have found a special ideal place)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / pepino not flowering or fruiting
« on: August 23, 2019, 03:16:32 AM »

my pepino as you can see above was bought at January and has since grown a lot but so far doesnt seem to produce any flowers or fruits. So far some days ago i saw the first cluster of a few flowers forming as you can see. But the plant doesnt seem to want to produce more. The temps are always in the range or 22°C - 37°C (71 - 99 °F) and plant seems happy. There is a strong possibility i am doing something terribly wrong as i have no idea how to grow this plant
