Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Achachairu - doing great in S. Fla
« on: September 24, 2023, 12:05:16 PM »
It's about 10 years old from seed.  I do have 1 other fruiting achacha that is about 7 years old.  It also is planted close to a Luc's Mexican Garcinia.  I don't think any cross pollination is happening, but it is possible.  The Achacha's seem to be self pollinating from what I can tell.  I just use some standard fruit tree granular fertilizer once in awhile- no real schedule, and I give it little attention.  It just does its thing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Achachairu - doing great in S. Fla

My Achachairu (garcinia humilis) tree is still doing great in Southeast Florida.  I have posted about it before, but figured I would make a quick update video.  This tree is really fantastic.  Pest animals and insects avoid it.  It has a prolonged season now, giving fruit form about May until late September.  Low maintenance, not too tall, but it is wide.  Seems to tolerate cold snaps, and our soils.  Low maintenance, but takes a long time before it starts to put on size.

Thanks !   I like both varieties , not sure which I prefer when it comes to taste.  The benefit of yellow is it self pollinates in my yard, downside is the thorns !  The purple fleshed ones have not self pollinated, so I'm stuck trying to find red or white pollen to get fruit set ..

I'm glad to see it is true these get so wide as I was told. I planted 20 trees two years ago at 25 ft spacing. They seem so far apart but I did fit a soursop between each of them.
Here is another example of similar size in Florida, Fort Myers area, see video at 2:30 minutes.

That one is enormous.  Definitely bigger than mine !

Thanks everyone for the responses . From my experience, the trees do like partial shade when they are young.  The seedlings that I had planed out in the open and full sun did not grow as quickly as the shaded ones.  I probably gave some foliar spays in addition to granular fertilizer when the tree was young, now its just granular stuff.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sugarloaf or Pineapple Pleasure
« on: July 02, 2021, 01:58:45 PM »
As evaluating mango’s often goes, my impression of pineapple pleasure has changed.  This year it is easily my #1.  Truly amazing taste that has blown away almost everyone who has had the pleasure of trying it.

Yeah, what you are doing is about all you can do imho.  It's about population control.  Can't get them all, but you can reduce the pest load. I have found that keeping up your control measures year around helps.  Don't limit your efforts to the fruiting season.

There is a slight color change sometimes as an indicator.  That’s probably less than 50% of the time in my experience, and it is usually slight.  Maybe 10% get an obvious color break.  This is of course on my tree at my location.  Over 10 years producing.

Malika
Carrie
Ice cream

Not sure if they are the most difficult, but not easy to get right.

Survey completed.

Yeah, I don’t eat any fruit that’s been chewed into by any critter.  Not swapping spit with one of those bushy tailed devils for sure.

In 2012 I hat racked an Alphonso tree I was growing because the fruit were so terrible.  I top worked Pineapple Pleasure onto the stump.  It took it awhile to get going, but now it’s a heavy producer.  Mine is a medium/large tree with a wide and open canopy.  I definitely have not trimmed it back enough, but I wanted to keep getting a lot of fruit.  This year, it’s loaded.  Has to be a couple hundred ponds of fruit on it, they are really big.  Not as big as Keitt, but almost.  Overall mine has had reasonable disease tolerance, but definitely has had - couple low production years, maybe fungal related.  This year it’s a total champ, as the weather has been phenomenal.

It tastes really good IMO. At this point I don’t like it as much as a Fruit Punch, Seacrest, Lemon Zest, or Dot- but it’s very close.  Those that like a bit more acid than I do, may find it is pushing for their #1.

Lemon Zest is still a rock star ⭐️ for me down here in western Broward County South Florida.  At this point It’s still pushing as the #1 contender for GOAT status.

However, grown in different micro climates, let alone a different coast or continent, who knows …

Rosigold - way too bland tasting
Alfonso - doesn’t taste good here in S. Fla

The fruit keep dropping from the tree, found 3 on the ground this morning.  They are yellow, but still pretty hard and I think not yet ripe.  I’ll probably open one today as a few people are stopping by. The others most likely I’ll let sit and hopefully they ripen up.  Only 2 left on the tree.

That video was cute but by coincidence I visited some grandkids today with a few mangoes to share that were the earliest of the varieties. Outliers you might say. Henry had a small Sweet Tart that was 75% yellow. He went nuts on it and wanted more. I had a Carrie that was only 25% yellow on top and that was the next best one of the group and I didn’t even think it was ripe. He wanted another mango so I cut up the Carrie and decided to video what happened. It’s only about a minute long and isn’t scientific but I think you’ll love it. Also my wife got a bag of California white peaches at Trader Joe’s 2 days ago that felt hard but inside soft and super sweet. The flesh was the exact same color as inside a Sugarloaf.
PS you want real no bs well this is pure straight refreshing honesty from a 9 year old kid!

That was great, he couldn’t even look at ya - too busy mowing down that Carrie 😳👍

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Video - Picking Mango’s at color break

Grinding out the video’s today.  Thought I would share, as I get a lot of questions regarding when to pick a mango.

Your friend didn't go you any justice.   Based on the video of you cutting, that peach was not truly ripe and by looks, no different than what you get here from the roadside stand.  A ripe b peach from a Georgia grove would be melting and spewing juices.  I used to go to the Georgia growers and get fresh picked Lane peaches, not those picked and sent to the packers qhich make their qay to stores and many roadside stands..

Like just about any prime fresh picked fruit from the grower, it will battle head to head with any mango (those who have had fresh picked Zaiger interspecific stone fruit know what I mean).

Yeah, I’m sure.  It was kind of just for fun and to stir the pot.  That peach had no chance 😳😆

Ive been pumping out some videos lately - this is what I'm doing on my vacation LOL.  I bet you can guess the winner ...
