Don't worry about running. Bananas are clumpers, unlike some bamboos.

I don't know enough to know what's a small banana. Maybe the one called dwarf orinoco?
I'm just starting to grow gold finger. I was told it's slightly smaller than thousand fingers.

Dwarf Red is very compact and doesn't get tall quickly.  But it has giant dark green leaves with some red in the stems--a real beauty.

i was just on this  site
lots of info here. - page 2 has a list by height...
several mentioned. i know dwarf Namwah is good.
i have an ice cream which is over 12ft and growing.
and a dwarf that just fruited, but i dont know the ID.
dwarf Brazilian, dwarf red,  and Rajapuri are pretty popular as well,
but i think the Raja might get a little bigger/

The shortest ones we grow are dwarf red (nicest looking, slower to fruit), Raja Puri (very prolific), Dwarf Orincoco (great multiuse banana - can be cooked green, yellow, or eaten out of hand when very ripe). Dwarf namwa is another great banana, but I suggest getting that one from another member as many dwarfs that came from tissue culture end up as taller namwa.

Another good source of banana varieties is the Encanto Farms web page:
http://webebananas.com/bvar-A-B.html

Lots of information on sizes, taste, hardiness.  Not always well organized, but there is a lot of info.

Best of luck!
