I can't find much on that variety of Longan ... Fortune Eye, can you talk about it at all? There was mention of it at Toppy's, but not much information.

Fortune eye
Aka
Fuyan'

This is an important longan cultivar in Fujian province and accounted for over 90 percent of plantings in the province. It has a long planting history with total tree numbers exceeding one million. The fruit is large (18 g) with thin skin, small seed and thick crisp aril. Yield is high. It is best used for canning since the fruits have a low TSS value of 15-16 percent (Menzel et al., 1990).

I know Super Hass has previously been discussed.  Originally sold at Fruit Scapes, Bokeelia.

Could you explain what that means?  Does that mean it's not the best for eating fresh?

Total soluble solids (brix) of 15 is pretty low. That would seem to indicate that it's not very sweet and thus good for canning. I've never tried one though.

I would expect a TSS north of 20 on a good longan.

So it's the same as the sugar content?

As I understand it, brix is a measure of all "soluble solids," of which sugar makes up the lion's share. 15 degree of brix would be great for a starfruit or an orange, but it's pretty low for a longan, which tends to be syrupy sweet.

I found this chart which details brix levels for longan samples from the early 80's:

http://rfcarchives.org.au/Next/Fruits/Longan/LonganPerformance3-89.htm

Note Biew Kiew (my favorite) at the top with 21 degree brix and kohala towards the lower end with ~18 degree brix.

PS -- whether or not that blurb about Fortune Eye TSS is true or not is anybody's guess. You can't always trust literature, and fruit characteristics can vary by location... Someone from FL would have to chime in on their experience. I did find this post from someone at merit island  --> https://www.flickr.com/photos/3point141/16030427958/

Yah, I know. I just don't know whether it's accurate. It could be? I've found literature (even literature from UF's IFAS) to be of inconsistent veracity.

I have a scion that fruited last year. Fortune eye is an OK longan. Not too sweet but it's got good flavor. When you're tired of sickenly sweet longans, you'll appreciate some fortune eyes. Flesh is drier and doesn't get your fingers all sticky.

You're in AU. Isn't it hard to get stuff in?

If you're confident, hit me up 6-7 more months after harvest. They are blooming again
