Here is a great source on MANY Mango varieties and will answer many of your questions. I found these the most comprehensive descriptions out on the web.

Are there branches low on the tree, if so consider taking the tree down in thirds.
Take the first third now and graft on to regrowth, take the next third late in the season about harvest time and take the last third next year.  Or just take a third each year.  I have found out in my experience that grafts on a tree done this way grow faster than those on a tree cut to a stump.
I don't know if others have experienced this.
For me, future topwork will happen in increments.

Alright I found a couple low branches and cut them back some, hopefully they grow new growth from here.
The reason I wanted to cut it down so far was so I can start the branching closer to the ground. But we will see what happens. This way I can graft onto it this year instead of having to wait until next year most likely.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help me pick my next mango variety
« on: April 02, 2019, 04:44:31 PM »
A little background. I have a pretty good sized mango tree in my yard, probably around 25 feet high and 10 to 15 feet wide. This will be the second time it has flowered in the past 5 years, which I think only happened because I pruned it very heavily the prior year(this will be the second year if it holds onto its fruit) Last year the fruit was not very good tasting and they all had jelly seed throughout the whole fruit. This tree also gets anthracnose really bad which seems to be impossible to get rid of on this tree. My haden mango that is right next to it never has these problems. This year it flowered probably only on 1/8 to 1/6 of the tree. Most of the little mangos have anthracnose on them and are falling off so we will see if I get any mangos from it this year.

So my thought is if it does not give good mangos or does not give any mangos at all I will be getting out the chainsaw and cutting this thing down to somewhere around waist to chest high and grafting something better onto it next year/later this year if possible.

I am trying to figure out which variety I want and with all of them out there it is a hard choice. I would like to get one that is earlier in the season if possible since I have two other trees that are mid season varieties. But from what I have seen there are not too many great tasting early mangos. So being early is optional.

The two main criteria are highly disease resistant and a heavy/good producer. One that I have been looking into is Rosigold for an early variety but I cant seem to find much about taste, other than it is better than other early varieties. Currently I have a Haden (already in place when I bought the house) a PPK and this unknown mystery mango which is the topic of this conversation.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ghost ants on peach tree
« on: March 26, 2019, 10:54:22 AM »
My Peach seems to always have ghost ants on it, it is my only tree that I have ever seen ghost ants on. Usually when I think of ants in general I think of them as a bad thing, bringing aphids, scale and other unwanted pests onto the tree and feeding off of them(I had this issue with a mango tree). Now I don't know if ghost ants specifically do that or not but would like to know what your experience has been with ghost ants. Should I get rid of them or should I let them do their thing?

I have never noticed any aphids, scale or anything else on my peach tree, but once I saw the ants I usually get rid of them. But if ghost ants don't do any harm to the tree and are beneficial in some way I would rather not get rid of them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Weeds in nursery pots

I noticed a bursery using permeable geotextile weed discs. I'd be interested but didn't get the chance to ask how they have worked out. Similar to these:

Someone I know uses them and it seems to work good. However eventually grass and weeds start growing into them

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Black banded disease on mango?

Yeah I only found sort of useful information on this site:
https://mangifera.org/disease.php

There really does not seem to be much information on this. But I am happy that you guys notice that it does not actually cause any issues, besides it being ugly.

From what I see you just spray copper on it? I would rather it not spread to my other mango tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Black banded disease on mango?

This just popped up a week ago and has gotten a lot worse lately. From my research it seems like it is black banded disease? I have never seen this before? Any insite on what it could be and a way of dealing with it?

So since it does not look like I am going to get any mangos from my Haden tree is it alright to do some pruning now so I am more likely to get fruit next year, instead of waiting until later to prune? I want to clear out some extra branches to open it up more and also want to cut the rest of the lanky branches so it branches out. Or should I wait a month or so?

I subscribed to your channel and saw your post. There were only a few when we came a few weeks ago, now almost every one has a fruit on it! That is awesome.

61
My Haden, which is always LOADED with flowers, has ZERO on it...which is really strange. It is just growing new growth...any ideas?

Did you prune it late last year?

I did prune some long lanky branches late last spring so they would branch out. I figured it was too late to expect flowers on those branches this year. But I didn't do this for every branch. Most likely not even close to half of the tree, more like a quarter of the tree.... So I expected to get fruit from the non pruned branches. Guess not? It has always reliably given me fruit so I am surprised.

Looks good. That is basically how I want mine to look.I think prior to next season I will prune it back decent so I can make it more dense. How many fruit do you usually get off of a tree that size?

64
Okay thanks guys. After this fruit is harvested I am going to prune it back a couple feet so I can prune it more correctly while it is growing so the tree is more full.

Some where I saw to let it grow a foot or two (max) and then tip prune it so it branched. It is working pretty well but it is not full like I would like it.

I do like the idea of pruning it so you get multiple crops a year. I will have to try that next year when the tree is bigger.

65
Okay thank you. Ill tip and prune some branches now then. I just didnt want to do it now and then not get any fruit this year because of it. it seems like half of the tree is starting to put on new growth but the other half is not. There are currently 8 flower buds on it so I wont mess with those branches.

This is going to be the first time it has flowered. I just got it last year and it grew like crazy. Probably form 3 feet to around 7 feet now.

Do you usually get two crops off of yours?

66
I have been researching when I should prune my guava tree. I would like to prune it a bit but also would want to get fruit this season. I know they grow on new growth so would it be okay to prune now? or would that make me not get fruit until next year?

I am getting mixed answers to this question when I look it up. Some say winter, some say spring and that doing it in winter could be bad for it, some say do it whenever. The main thing is I want to prune it and still get fruit this season. Or if it is too late I at least want to know when to prune it this year so I still get fruit next year.

The tree is about 7 or so feet tall but would like to prune it so it branches out more.

67
Now if I could only get some of them in my yard! These weevils are eating everything up. They are usually just on my peach but they have now started taking a liking to my mango trees new growth!  >:( :-\

They are red potatoes, from what I am reading they only grow during the cooler months opposed to sweet potatoes that grow during the summer? If I transplant them somewhere will they just die in the summer heat? Have not done really any research on potatoes before.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mystery plant growing in compost bin
« on: February 28, 2019, 12:40:07 PM »
I have a compost bin that has been neglected and was not mixed around for a month or so. I opened it up today to mix it around and check the moisture level and I see a bunch of these plants growing in it.

I tossed in muscadine grape seeds along with many different types of vegetables. Anybody know what this could be? I was thinking grape at first when it was really small but not so much now.

72
Yeah I dont plan on spraying anything on the peach tree. I never have really sprayed anything on it in the past. I have fertilized once right around a month ago.

It seems to be a tiny bit behind but there is a flower on it now with more about to open up. I actually just bought a Florida Prince peach today at fruitscapes. My original tree I bought from home depot (do not remember the variety) four year ago but we only got fruit off of it the first year and in that time it has been pretty sickly and grew maybe a foot to a foot and a half in length. Irma knocked it over also destroying a lot of the roots I am assuming, as half of the tree died.

Last year was actually the first year it grew decent and was full of nice colored green leaves. You might have seen my two previous posts about my peach tree where it was not very good looking. But we got tired of waiting around to see what was going to happen and after 4 years that thing should be pretty big, but its not any taller than I am, and we bought it around that size. So decided to purchase another and if the original tree does good this year and takes off then we sure as heck wont complain about having two peach trees.

Since the tree is starting to grow more and flower I'll keep a better eye on the moisture level. But I would go out there every couple days and pull back the mulch and the soil would be moist, so havn't had to really bother with watering it much lately.

73
Thanks! Was planning on going out tonight but it is raining. So hopefully tomorrow I can go out there. Luckily I have only seen one at a time. So hopefully I do not have a bunch out there.

74
Yeah from what I read they dont any of the pests, so I might as well get rid of them because it is tearing my peach tree apart.

75
I would definitely put the avocado on a mound. I never have standing water in my yard and I put in an avocado tree on the steepest graded part of my yard and the thing still got root rot.

This time, with my new avocado tree, I built up almost a foot above the ground, then put the tree on top of that. Then made a big mound around it and then mulched on top of that. From what I hear you really need to mound an avocado tree in Florida.   So far so good with my new avocado tree. We will see what happens during rainy season.
