Where do you all get your root stock?
« on: October 21, 2012, 09:31:51 PM »
I'm a newcomer to growing avocados, mangoes, and papayas and after reading a bunch of stuff here I'd like to someday try my hand at grafting.
Where do I get the root stock?
Is an avocado or mango started from seed a good way to get root stock?

Yes to get root stock , just plant seeds.   with mangoes you you let the seedling grow about 8 months to a year, unless your doing epicotyl grafting, which in that case is right away.

traditionally a polyembryonic seed from a variety that are known to do well as rootstock are used.  ( Typically "turpentine" in Fla ) .  this way you will have consistent results,

but almost any seedling will do.

There are some threads discussing grafting techniques, use the handy search,  Carlos has a nice video on Avocado grafting.

When I started, Craigslist has been a valuable source of rootstocks for me. Now, I grow my own from seeds.

Thanks, my wife just put some avocado in her salad and I snatched the seed out of the trash can.  :)
