Best mango varieties for high rainfall
« on: July 31, 2018, 06:56:22 PM »
I am wondering if anyone has recommendations for disease resistant mangoes that fruit well in wetter tropics.  100+ inches rainfall annual east side big island hawaii.. I am growing relatives like odorata and kasturi. So far I have planted brooks late, maha chanok, rapoza, chock anon.  Most all fruits get destroyed by anthracnose on local trees.  Ive seen florigon do well but it is not so great of a mango.  Any suggestions would be most helpful thanks

In general, southeast Asian descended mangos do better in higher humidity (and rainfall) than do Indian descended mangos.  There is a general correlation of indian varieties to powdery mildew and anthracnose too.  With that said, perhaps Oscar (fruit lovers) can help you with the most disease resistant mango varieties on the big island, since he is there too.  Good luck.

From memory Oscar said Rosa and Rosigold among a few others but this related to my query on trees that would fruit where it rains every month (no dry season plus flowers exposed to lots of rain).  Disease resistance may be another matter.

Do you have zero chill at your elevation?

Of those you grow, which fruit consistently?  Inconsistently?

Nam Doc Mai is fruiting annually in a small clearing in the rain-forest east of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil--- lowland equatorial tropics, with 80-some inches of rain per year.

I would guess that Madame Francis would qualify for your quest also, as it resembles the "manga comun" that we had in the Amazon.

Valencia Pride fruits well in our southeastern Florida's "western communities," surrounded by the swamps and foggy nights.

I concur. If there is a better one, it must be fantastic.

I get over 90 inches and see mangoes in the 180 inches a year plus zone. Most of the rain is seasonal with 70% falling in a 4 month window in my part of the world. I think about 60 inches is about the best for the better SE Asian polys. Of course Kensington pride rules the roost in the high rainfall area but doesn't do as well as in drier areas.Keow sawoy,,NDM,rabaul and cedar bay all do well in 150 inches/yr but the big 2kg Taiwan gold flourishes.

My Nam doc mai split due to heavy rain.  Fairchild originally from Central America did wonderful with full flavor and little problems from the wet spring when other types had powdery mildew problems to harvest.

Mangoes usually ripen before the rainy season is in full swing in warmer climates. This is a saving grace in most tropical seasonal areas.

I’m sure there is some history explaining this but with all the talk of great mangos, Kensington Pride gets no mention. Does it not grow well in the USA?

Kensington Pride grows fine here but the Fruit quality is considered just ok. I rank it on par with Valencia Pride. It’s a good Mango but not great. The Newer Zill varieties are flavor and sugar bombs.

Chris at TrulyTropical took out a KP recently

Even experts can’t grow a quality KP here.

Makes me wonder how well the quality US varieties translate in Australia? Any one with experience?

Some Sri Lankan varieties are known to do well in wet conditions.  See Karuth and Vellai Colomban.  Dont know how they would do in Hawaiian climate.

These varieties fruit in borderline rainforest climate without any care or spraying. During peak of two monsoon seasons May and October sun may not come out for entire month. These still manage to fruit. I saw Squam has a young tree. Would be interesting to see how it performs in Florida.
I have Rapoza that managed to fruit for me during monsoon season without any spraying.

This is useful.  Do tell how Karuth and Vellai C taste.

Rapoza is a known persistent flowering cultivar so this makes sense.

Maprangs can be an ok replacement for mangoes in wet areas.  Sweet and sweet sour types. Not as good though.
Magnifera rubrapeltata or something spelled like that supposedly does well in wet areas.  Never tried yet. Our tree is 8ft, soon we hope.
What about Wani white mango, and lilijiwo?

Pickering is the only mango tree that I've been able to grow successfully on the north side of my house where it stays wet with occasional flooding almost all year since this side gets shaded by the house (not much in the summer) and it's where most of the rainwater gets drained by my house and all my neighbor's houses. This year my 4'x4' Pickering bore 19 fruits even after suffering the impacts of Irma last year and staying in the shade for almost all winter. Best of all, the fruits are never washed out like with other varieties under the same conditions. I recently planted another Pickering and so far so good.

I'm growing Vellai in close proximity to a canal bank, I'll report in a few years on flavor

Maprangs like a drier climate with a seasonal 80 inches ideal. The KP anomaly cannot easily be explained and neither can the fact that Floridian mangoes like keitt, kent and a whole lot of others are held in such low regard in Australia are very rarely sold commercially.and taste poor to most consumers.KP is held in high regard in SE Asia where they are exported to and premium prices are paid yet in the US they are considered inferior even to NMD and Maha Chanok. This has been discussed many times on the forum without resolution.

Yeah I’ve never really got that. I figured that the Florida varieties must have just been that much better. Having now eaten an assortment of the older Florida varieties (Keit, Kent, Palmer etc) I too prefer KP. Climate or part of being brought up on them? I am keen to try some of the newer next level/Zill mangos when they start producing here.
