Title: Bad bug
Post by: yoski on June 30, 2020, 06:15:53 PM
This guy (about 1/4 inch) is eating my Lychee and Mamey leaves:

Who is this and how do I get rid of them? Other than crushing them with my finger nails, I use "BioAdvanced" which is some multi-purpose bug & disease control. It lasts about 2 weeks, then I have to spray again. Anything more effective?

It's called the Sri Lankan Weevil. They seem to come and go here and also seem to have their favorite trees. Some trees they completely ignore.

Been dealing with them for over 6 years.  At my house they have favorites, for sure, but ignore nothing. There was another thread a few weeks backs about these little monsters. I’ve been told imidacloprid drench will work for them. The key is to control the grubs, so even if you crush millions of them (and I have), there will be millions more unless you get to the grubs. Good luck.

Here's a current post talking about the same bug.

The issue is this weevil will go in nearby oaks and it's hard to
totally eradicate it. I did try imidacloprid and it didn't help.
I also tried the nematode Steinernema sp. that is suppose to eat the larvae and
it didn't work. It did get rid of the majority of fire ants for a year?
The weevil has a larval stage and feeds on the roots of the tree.
After it pupates its attacks the new growth on the leaves if available.
If not it will settle for older leaves. The weevil has it's favorites but settles
for what's available. I tried allot of poisons and this is the stuff that works

https://www.amazon.com/Bifen-Control-Solutions-Insecticide-Concentrates/dp/B003W0OVBE/ref=sr_1_15?crid=2NURMSBHC97DC&dchild=1&keywords=talstar+professional+insecticide&qid=1593571639&sprefix=talstar%2Caps%2C213&sr=8-15 (https://www.amazon.com/Bifen-Control-Solutions-Insecticide-Concentrates/dp/B003W0OVBE/ref=sr_1_15?crid=2NURMSBHC97DC&dchild=1&keywords=talstar+professional+insecticide&qid=1593571639&sprefix=talstar%2Caps%2C213&sr=8-15)

When you spray this on your trees you will not find the weevil afterwards. But the larvae will continue to
pupate and in about 30 days you will have a reinfestation. This poison works on everything!
I don't spray it on fruit and I try to use in the winter. It will help you control the weevil and
maybe if you spray the whole tree once and hit the trunks every 3-4 weeks you could eliminate them
as long as there are not other trees in the vicinity.

Thanks, I will try that. I hate to spray chemicals, but this bug is very persistent.

Hard to say.  After seeing the pic (from the above link shared in the previous post discussing this issue), I’ve actually see both in my yard, but I believe the vast majority of mine are Sri Lankan.

Wow, from a distance those two look nearly identical. Now that I look at it i'm pretty sure I have the Sri Lankan too, but I believe that ive seen leaf nothcers too. Hard to tell since they look so similar.

Sevin worked really well for me. Just spray the ground too to make sure they cant come back.
