Citrus General Discussion / Re: Thorns on Root Cuttings (?)
« on: April 21, 2019, 05:16:30 PM »
Thanks, Laaz.
some were over an inch long.  I just clipped them off.
I guess they are like fingernails - they'll grow back in time (I guess).
will find out in a month or so if the cuttings take root - or not.

Citrus General Discussion / Thorns on Root Cuttings (?)
« on: April 21, 2019, 10:04:48 AM »
when preparing citrus root cuttings, do you remove the thorns ?
is it detrimental to the plant if they are removed ?
or ~ does it really matter one way or the other.
I just got several "rootable" cuttings from a friend and I am not
particularly fond of working with the prickly parts.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / mysterious Loquat Seeds
« on: April 14, 2019, 05:16:16 PM »
stopped by my friend's loquat "farm" last week and gathered
some dropped fruit for seeds.  I found this one fruit that was
almost twice the size of all the others and I set that one aside.
upon opening it up, I found that the 5 seeds were twice the size
of the common loquat seeds.
(I feel bad that I did not think to get a photo of the fruit before I opened it).
I am only familiar with the common loquat that my friend has
so I have no idea what it could possibly be.
has anyone ever seen anything like this ?  I am not going to plant them
because I don't have 5-8 years to see how it turns out.  I have some seeds
to give away and will include one of these seeds in the packet for the
recipient to experiment with.
any ideas as to what the mutant could be ?

Brian - there is no graft line.  it is not a grafted plant.
it is a rooted cutting from a Black Star that had been grafted.
and to my understanding, cuttings that have been rooted will
keep the DNA of the grafted Black Star ?
since I only purchased the one plant, I will not lose any sleep over it
if that is not the way it works. . . . just disappointed is all.
and will purchase grafting scions from reputable sources when they are available.

can a grafted Black Star cutting revert back to the common red tart variety ??

I bought a potted cutting of a Black Star from E-Bay last year
for my "donor" plant when it is old enough to harvest scions from.
I have about a dozen or so of the regular red Eugenia Uniflora
Surinams that I raised from seeds that will receive the grafts.
The E-Bay seller stated strongly that "sometimes" the Black Star
will revert back to the common red tart variety.
now I have been thinking that this "may be" his way of selling the common
red variety and passing them off as Black Star and then in 3 years when it
possibly fruits, I will think it reverted back to the common Eugenia Uniflora.

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Re: Garlic
« on: April 05, 2019, 11:06:32 AM »
Gary - my wife has planted two 15 foot rows of "grocery store" garlic cloves
for the past 4 years with good results.  She has not had good success
with the Elephant Garlic for some reason. (it may be a PH issue with the soil)
I finally replaced my 40 year old (and seldom used) PH meter for a higher quality
one and we will be paying more attention to soil quality now that we are in a new
location.  Our old place in Winter Garden had pretty rich sandy soil that
grew just about everything well.
so yes, your garlic should do very well if the PH is between 6.0 and 7.5 with good drainage.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / hello from Central Florida (9a)
« on: March 23, 2019, 09:00:47 PM »
greetings from Kissimmee
I'm finally downsized enough in life just to piddle in a few hobbies
that I have had to put off for a long time.
presently have a few Loquat, Lychee, Surinam Cherry and orange trees.
my interest isn't just raising them but to improve the product with grafts
and cuttings and see where it goes.
just an old dog learning new tricks
