Tropical Fruit Discussion / First Sapodilla Flowers
« on: May 27, 2018, 02:58:21 PM »
Pretty excited to see my Alano Sapodilla starting to flower here in South Florida.  Seems a bit late in the season for its first flowers. Hopefully in a couple weeks or months I’ll have some fruit.

How big do finger lime trees get? Does anyone have pics of their own?

😂 guess that’s why there are so many different varieties. Carrie is one of my favorite mangoes.

Seems to me they didn't finish the job.. after all it is a Carrie mango...

I checked another site, looks like it will be close to 32 for a couple hours here in western PSL.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Last minute cold prep SE FL

I wasn’t expecting or didn’t notice it was projected to be around 32* degrees here in PSL tomorrow around sunrise. What should I do with 3+ 7’ mango trees that have bubblers on the irrigation system. I am thinking of putting pots around the trunk and running the bubblers. Not sure what to do with my other small Lychee, small Jabotacabas, and a few small banana trees. I have an irrigation system I could turn on but it won’t be able to consistently cover all the trees.  Should I wrap the trunks with towels or blankets? Just not sure what to do to protect the trees.

I haven’t seen one locally by me but a rental company may have a spade. Here is an example.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First haul of strawberries
« on: December 09, 2017, 07:49:43 PM »
Planted a few strawberry plants less than a month or so ago. The critters started getting at them so I figured it was time for me to pick the first crop. They are very tasty, I don’t know why I haven’t planted these in years past. Oh well, no better time than right now to plant them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sugar Apple issues
« on: December 08, 2017, 05:03:34 PM »
I recently planted this Sugar Apple. It was planted about a month ago. It’s almost 6’ tall. There is a lot of damage and the leaves are getting brown spots and dying. Any idea the cause?

As mentioned above, these aluminum tags are great to fill the need. The metal is soft enough to indent the with normal writing from a ball point pen. 50 of them for $10. Really hard to beat.

I have 2 small Jabotacaba, one standard variety 4.5' tall and other is Hybrid red 2' tall, planed about 3-4 months ago. I also have a Sweetheart Lychee about 4.5' tall and wonder what is the best fertilizer for both types of trees.

My Carrie produced a nice crop. Fruit was great, not washed out flavor.

There's black on the branches.. so it's not anthracnose..? That's good news! I'll take some more pics when I get home. I use a citrus granule every other month, I think it's for Avacodo 6-6-6. This year I started adding cow manure, top soil, and mulch every six months for some food too.

Switch to a high quality palm fertilizer.  Do not add top soil or cow manure and make sure the crown roots are not buried.  Keep an area about 18" out from the trunk ckear of mulch and then you can apply tye mulch from that distance out yo a 3' - 4' mark.  Best mulch to use is grade A pure cypress mulch.  Avoid eucalyptus and any died mulch.

Rob, Is this a good idea for all mango trees? I typically use Citrus fertilizer.

My Kent tree has it pretty bad too.

I'm in SFL with 3 relatively young Citrus trees planed within last 12 months. Is there anything one can do to prevent Greening?

Is it too early to pick these? Having trouble with the 4 legged critters.
