Guava from taiwan
« on: February 18, 2018, 12:13:18 PM »
My friend gave me a guava from his new tree, that is from Taiwan.

It was best guave i ever had, very nice sweet with fresh sour. He grow it organic in special bags to protect from sun. It was not nice green but grey skin but taste was very good. Better then all the Thai guava's.

Have you tried these guava's? They are new he said.

No my battery was empty, but it has white flesh baseball size.

I hope the Taiwan members can tell about the new guava's, they have more new varieties.

Did it have seeds?

The sweetest best tasting green skinned crunchy guava I’ve ever eaten was what I believe is an Indonesian or Thai seedless guava.

I ate indonesian guava but they were so tasteless...and thai seedless also taste bad, no flavour.

We have sweet one for eating crispy but from Taiwan is much better. I will ask my friend for clone his tree and replace mine.

His tree always has fruit but have to wait long time before it is ripe.

Thai guava always look very nice green but that is from spray chemicals. My friend grow in bags from white fabric but then the fruit get gray.

His guava has seeds but not much, he said Taiwan has more new variety so i will try to find it.

There are a few great types here.  Your friendDis probably organic, but most guacamole, and other fruit is bagged then sprayed quite a lot.  I personally don't eat store bought for that reason.

I also find the pink flesh and the true purple guavas incredibly sweet.

Maybe it's the Crystal guava from Taiwan.  It's productive, almost seedless and is dwarf.  Some members say it's the best guava.

I ate crystal from Indonesia, it is the same as Kim Yu in Thailand, not the best...we have better guava's like pen si thong.

It might be what the locals call 'Milky Guava' , I hope I translate this right. I lived in Indonesia for 18 years and in Taiwan for 12 years.
Taiwan has the best guava, because their farmers are so diligent and innovative to try creating new superior quality.
For example, if Thailand has a new variety which is big and crunchy but not sweet, Taiwanese farmers will crossbreed this with ones that has sweet taste to create superior ones.

Yes, many people and some nurseries say they like Taiwan guava the most.  Thailand also gives us many good tropical fruit cultivars, but the Taiwanese farmers and agriculture scientist are very diligent and innovative.  Maybe they spend more in R&D.

There are a lots of plant breeders in Taiwan for sure.  Many like me do it small scale (nursery/horticulture) but the government also spends a lot on developing new varieties.  Some quite large corporations are also involved with various crops.  Guava are good here for those that like them.  Some fruit like mango are still not there yet in my opinion.  Taste isnt often the primary target.

Personally not a guava guy, but i prefer the red and pink types.

hey Sunny, I planted a few new kinds 2 years ago, picked up some very healthy air layered ones from the Ag University fair in Surat Thani.  The one in the picture caught my eye for the odd large shape, and also it is seedless. I'll let you know later if it is good.

I think maybe Crystal guava from Taiwan is different from Crystal guava from Malaysia or Indonesia.
Crystal from Malaysia or Indonesia has round leaves.  Crystal Taiwan has normal shaped leaves and is dwarf.
I think the Crystal from Taiwan is supposed to be tastier and more productive, but is not completely seedless.
Can anyone confirm or refute this?

Taiwan improves fruit so it should be better...or maybe the Indonesian's pick them too early. But what i bought was tasteless and named crystal.

I also have thai kim-yu in the fridge, for 3 weeks now....not interested to eat them. We all want sweet crunchy big ones now.

if your really wanting a big sweet crunchy one, head to Loei, they have the best guava in Thailand, their climate is best for it, being a bit more subtropical like Hawaii.
