Title: Mangifera indica / odorata graft compatibility
Post by: HIfarm on May 18, 2018, 12:19:16 AM
I just wanted to doublecheck, I think I had read here that mango & kuini are graft compatible, correct?

Thanks!
John

Yes, I also recall that Mangifera Indica is graft compatible with Mangifera Casturi and Mangifera Odorata (Kuini).

Hi John,

I can confirm that M. x odorata (now said to be a M. indica x M. foetida cross and demoted from species status) and M. casturi are graft compatible with M. indica.  But the Rampangi (M. x odorata x M. foetida) is not graft compatible with M. indica and so we put it on M. x odorata.  Odorata is polyembryonic, bears up to several times a year, often in winter, with a strong flavor, propane smell, and fiber.  Hard mature fruits fall to the ground and are easily gathered in great condition.  No fruit fly but the sap can be caustic.  I am a huge fan of these fruits and encourage everyone in wet tropical areas to plant them.

Aloha,

Steph

Is kuini graft compatible with kasturi?

Hey Steph, haven't "talked" in a while, I hope you are doing well.  Thanks for the info on the graft compatlbility.  I tried some kuini from Micah & I agree that they are very tasty.  My young trees are growing very strongly but have not yet flowered.

I'm with Micah, give us a taste report on rampangi!  Is there more fiber?  More of that turpentiney flavor? (than kuini)

Aloha,
John

Ha.  I wish.  No fruit here yet.

From a Fairchild report posted earlier by ftmyersfruit:

A putative M. odorata/M. foetida hybrid, called Rampagni (misspelled), for the experiment station in Sarawak, Malaysia where it was collected, has performed well in the field for more than 10 years. The tree is similar in appearance to kuini, although the leaves are smaller, more rigid and the growth habit is more spreading. The new growth and the inflorescences are a bright red color and highly ornamental. The fruit are larger than those of kuini and are yellow at full maturity. The leaves, blooms and fruit are highly tolerant of anthracnose and powdery mildew, but the tree branches with green bark are highly susceptible to bacteria infection. The tree has survived many cold events, but blooming and fruit set has been poor following cold winters.

Richard and Noris also note that they are trialling several accessions of M. odorata.  They are polyembryonic and I haven't noticed any variation in the separately sourced trees I've tried.

Yeah Micah we like the casturis too.  They're late this year, just starting.

We received a very similar fruit from Frankie as M. griffithii.  Tree and fruit very similar to casturi though the skin is much lighter in color, maybe mottled lilac? rather than dark purple.  Not sure if that's really M. griffithii.

Hi John, are your odoratas seedlings?  Our seedlings took a long time to fruit, maybe 9 years, while the grafted trees took more like 4 years.

Aloha,

Steph

Thanks, Steph, you'll have to give us a report when you get rampangi fruiting.  I recall kuini being decent sized fruit so these rampangi must be pretty good sized.

Have you fruited this "griffithii' from Frankie's?  Reports?  I got seeds by way of Lance on Oahu & I think I passed one on to someone, Micah I think.

Yeah, my kuini are seedlings.  Surprisingly, not from Micah -- I somehow lost the seedling(s?) from him (don't recall what happened to them).  I got these from a grower in FL.  I was looking for lalijiwa and he had these seeds as well.  I've had them for a while but it sounds like I probably still have a few years before I can expect fruit.

The red color on the new growth of the kuini (like the rampangi) is very striking and it holds until the leaves are quite large.  It does make these really showy.

The griffithii still alive?   Eating it side by side could tell slight differences if I recall correctly.   But couldn't. Tell differences from you only had one by itself...  My palette isn't that great

Yup, despite some idiot decapitating it with a kama by accident (guilty) when the weeds started to get a bit overgrown.  So, now it is working on a nice bushy growth habit...  I've got it in a low, wet spot (I heard that they can take wet areas) & it seems happy there.

Lynn said when they found it in Indonesia it was growing inside a flooded rice paddy.  I wonder if kasturi is that extreme

Here is a photo of my Kuini, a selected variety from the collection of David Chandlee. It is grafted onto common mango (M.indica) and has been in the ground for about 16 years.
