Yes it is. Mine do the same. Through thinning you could probably reduce its impact.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Kumquat varieties update
« on: January 27, 2017, 09:57:56 AM »
Brian, Very accurate description. I share your opinion of nippon, Indio and nagami. However I dont find fukushu to be very good, the only one I still have is meiwa, the best kumquat, in my opinion. I did have a sunquat, I think you will find them in the same arena as indio and nippon, more of an ornamental. One application though is for cooking and candying.

Andrew, to preface my opinion:  I have harvested my own dekopans for 2 seasons (3rd coming early next year) and before that I bought quite a few from the grocery store. I have had a page tree for about 6-7 years now? I cant remember exactly but its about that. I have bought page fruit from the grocery store as well. Page is a very good flavored fruit, light and a little tangy, juicy and sweet if ripened with warmer nights (~50F) has a great rind color. Page is a good yielder but the fruit can be seedy and small, fruit thinning is important. Its growth habit is upright and tall, and must be frequently pruned. it is definitely worth growing.

Dekopan stands out in the crowd because of a few things. Its large size, lack of seeds, very soft segment membranes and its ornamental appeal are probably its biggest advantages. Don't get me wrong the fruits flavor is also very good but, I would consider the fruit flavor to be a 8.5 where page would be a 9. Dekopan is also a surprisingly good yielder, the first season the tree fruited(one year after i got it) I got abound 10 fruit on a very small tree,. Overall I would say all things considered dekopan is a better tree to own.

I am having the toughest time getting rid of Cottony Cushion Scale. Is there a formula for getting these buggers gone?
Ants are not the problem, I have gotten rid of them a while ago.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Florida mango question
« on: May 20, 2016, 02:29:14 PM »
My mango tree has some leaf spotting I was wondering If anyone could assist in diagnosing. I am relatively new with mangoes so I cannot identify this, as far as I know no fertilizer has been used and it is being watered with well water. New growth looks normal and healthy appears to only affect older leaves, tree appears not as dense and green as healthy mango trees in the area.

Oh yes, me too, Moro is my favorite as well - by a long shot. they are more tart but have excellent flavor and color, make perfect juice. They produce more fruit and it a is all around a better stronger tree. Tarocco has always been too sweet for me, lacking in acid. Interesting thing about my Moros is they are still outside. When they are larger, they have no problem with upper 20's (min is probably 26-28F) they color up extremely well when exposed to cold temperatures. Ill take them in when temps start going below 25F. Also, no leaf loss at all.

They topically are ready late season. meaning Feb-March, you are still several months away before ripeness.

Are there any concerns about tar or chemicals made for roofing shingles contaminating the water?

My Observation about a Florida Temple sampled in January - some seeds, sweet, tangy, faintly spicy aroma & flavor, aromatic, some tangerine notes, Faint spicy aftertaste, hard to describe. Very Juicy not firm texture. Thin dark orange rind & light orange internal color. Somewhat tough segment connections. Unique flavor very good

I think something worth mentioning is how easy they are to grow. They set fruit pretty easily and are a constant grower throughout the season, require pruning early on. Put them in the hottest area of your greenhouse and they are sure to ripen properly, sample fruit starting late January.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Seedless Or Low-Seeded Mandarin Varieties
« on: February 06, 2015, 11:20:02 AM »
Bush2Beach, Just like UCR indicates, Page is seedy.

However, there may be a technicality -  just because a pollinator is nearby, that tree may not flower at the same time and may not actually pollinate the Page if flowering times are not in sync. My page flowered late this past year and the majority of the fruits are seedless or very low seeded.

Also the definition of seedless I believe, means each fruit can contain 5 or less seeds. So calling page seedless could be yes some years and no others.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Seedless Or Low-Seeded Mandarin Varieties
« on: February 05, 2015, 11:45:58 AM »
Page are seedy only if a suitable pollinator is nearby. - I don't have the list handy but many mandarins and some oranges will pollinate them. I have just a few on my tree this year, maybe 15 fruits, but they are large and extremely sweet if you let them hang until around now. A worthy addition to ones collection.

For Michigan. You want a hardy, easy to fruit tree that stays smallish with quality fruit probably. Page, tango, dekopan would probably work too, gold nugget I would also consider possibly a clementine.
