WANTED: Sugar cane jujube cuttings
« on: May 29, 2019, 06:55:54 AM »
I've read that it is possible to root jujube cuttings if done properly, like described here: https://homeguides.sfgate.com/cutting-jujube-40417.html

Would anyone be willing to sell some sugar cane jujube cuttings? I'm only interested in this variety.

It is kind of late for jujube grafting. I can cut you some this fall if you want, you can wrap them in a wet paper towel and store them in a zipper bag in the fridge at 30F for up to 8 months. Late Springs will be the best time to graft jujube since they leaf out very lately.

Rooting method is not recommended since the success rate would be extremely low, but if you want you can try to root dormant scion wood in late spring with rooted hormone. If you want I can send you root sucker of wild jujube as well or I can graft them on the root-sucker for you if you want to wait.

Sugar cane is very shy in fruit yield unless you have other variety to cross pollinate. I suggest you to honey jar instead, for the fruit size is similar and a bit juicier. To me honey jar is a bit superior than sugar cane.

Agreed with everything lavender said

@lavender87

Thanks for the answer. The problem is, I'm not even sure if it is possible for a live plant from the US to pass our border. I have recently tried ordering some pomegranate rooted cuttings from Italy and it worked, but I'm not sure that it would work in general from any country. The shipping was already expensive enough for me and I can only imagine that the shipping for a significantly larger package from the US would be too much.

I do have two other jujube trees so this would not be a problem. I'm actually living in Belgrade, Serbia, but I've grown up on the Montenegrin coastline, and wild jujubes are everywhere there. In fact, it might be a kind that you don't have in the US. It is small and oval. http://www.zenasamja.me/images/full/1455.jpg I remember trying once a large jujube variety (don't know the name, probably Li), and it was inferior to the little wild one. Very bland in comparison, with less flavor. Not sure if this is a general rule, as I haven't since tried any jujube variety other than the good old wild ones from Montenegro. I have two Lang trees in Belgrade, but I only planted them this year.

I know that grafting also has a low success rate and I never did it before so I figured I would have more luck trying to root cuttings. Also, cuttings should be easier to pack in a small package that would probably pass the customs without any issues.

And yeah, sure, I would definitely go for the superior variety if possible.

Jujube grafting has an extemely high success rate (nearly 100%)  if you know the trick and graft at the right moment of the year, too soon or too late would result in graft failure; howeve, rooting jujube had an extremely low rate of success even with rooting hormone.

The reaon jujube was almost impossible to root is that its branch store too little energy to withstand long enough for the root to grow.

I only grow top quality jujube, which has equal or above quality in taste comparing to the original wild jujube. And you were right, there exist nearly non of the jujube variety that can compete with the wild jujube fruit in term of fragrances. Human tried to sellect the best characters of jujube fruit that match their need like high in sugar content, larger in size, firmer for drying..., but they totally missed the criterion for fragrances. Nowday, we have more than 2000 variety, but only a few can compare to wild jujube in term of flavor. Honey Jar is small size fruit a little bigger than wild but has much more flesh and still retains some spicy notes and very juicy beside its high sugar content. GA-866 is extremely sweet and in large size, but the total quality is a little inferior to honey jar in term of juiciness and fragrances; GA-866 is also very shy in fruit productivity. There are many more of the top quality line jujubes, and it would take the whole day to describe.

I'll check the rate of shipping small scion wood to your location in late Falls. Just send me your address in PM.

How about indian jujube? Is it any good? I've seen some negative reviews on YouTube.

Isn't the Thai jujube large almost like an apple, eaten green and has hardly any flavor? And what do you think cold hardiness of that jujube is?

Thanks for the Sugarcane vs. Honey jar comparison, especially the difference in production. I grafted both this year to the same tree and they both made tiny fruits. The honey jar grew a new trunk while the sugarcane only grew fruiting twigs.

There is a very well explained video on youtube from Dr.Shengrui Yao, a New Mexico State University fruit tree specialist, in which she explains the different kinds of jujube grafting.
Well worth watching.
