Starfruit/Carambola Flowering and Fruiting
« on: July 28, 2018, 01:47:26 PM »
Hi,

I have a Kari variety starfruit thats putting out tons of flowers. It's the only starfruit I own, what are my chances it will set fruit? Should I hand pollinate them if that is possible and how?

Thanks.

My solo starfruit has also bloomed twice without setting fruit.

There are a few types they say that seems to produce well without another variety to help pollinate, fwang tung golden and arkin. The research is pretty easy to find on google. Some have short vs long styles and it is recommended to have one of each type. I have a small 3 gallon fwang tung that is already flowering and looks to be holding a few dime sized fruit. The local nursery just received some nice Kari, I am contem plating getting one of those just because I read they are one of the best varieties and couldn't hurt pollination of the fwang tung although it is said to not need it.

I have Arkin which fruits well by itself. It drops quite a few prematurely but starts with a rediculous amount of fruit. I don’t think it could support them all if it tried. I assumed most were self fertile but Cythompsin’s info above suggests I was assuming wrong. Very interesting.

My Kari is now pushing out fruit from what seems to be every flower formed on the tree. At least 100+ fruit on a 5ft tall and 3/4'' trunk.

My Kari sets fruit very well on its own. Has since it was in a 3 gallon pot, and even more now in ground. There might be other trees in the neighborhood, but I don't know of any.

None of the carambola varieties typically sold in nurseries require cross-pollination to set fruit.

I've grown Arkin, Kari (Kary), Fwang Tung, Sri Kambangan - all of them fruit well on their own.

Besides mulberry, [grafted] starfruit is one of the most productive fruit trees at a young age.
