Visiting South Florida April - Where are the fruit?
« on: April 10, 2013, 01:49:34 PM »
I have a last minute business to the Miami area from Apr 22 - 25th.  Will have a limited time to look around but I will make some time.  What should I expect to be available at this time of year?  Any hints on where I can find local or even imported delectables will be appreciated!

With the screwy season you just might find some early mangoes

The mango season this year is definitely screwy. My Carrie is going through a major blooming cycle now.

My Carrie has some fruit that will be ready within a couple weeks, and... its just finishing up with a second full bloom as well.

If you can, I recommend taking a drive down Krome/177th Ave. Anywhere South of 88th St. on Krome their are people selling fruit by the side of the road

April is a rather slow month for fruit in SFLA. You should find some Sapodillas, Papaya and maybe some Custard apples. For tasting some, try the store at the Fruit & Spice Pk since they may also know who has ripe fruit.

Costco has really good watermelon right now. Whole Foods has Dekopons.

A few are holding on the latest bloom but not that many.

What are dekopons? By the way, I went to Whole Foods today and there wasn't a single rare thing! They had some really ugly papayas, but that was about it.

I also have the same question.  And that is one crazy avatar.

Blooms haven't opened-up up yet. The first bloom produced short flowers. One full-sized flower produced a fruit and it fell off. Now there's even more flowers and seem to have more vigor than the flowers from the first bloom.

Dekopon is a hybrid type of citrus recently developed in Japan. It looks kind of like a Minneola tangelo and tastes like a mandarin.

I haven't tried them, but supposed to be excellent quality. I guess you can say that about anything, like what's the point of growing Keitt when you can grow Haden mango? They're different, that's the point.  ::)  Can also have different seasons maybe?

Thanks to all who offers suggestions on this.  My trip was far too busy to take advantage of anything beyond the Miami beach whole foods (where i got some nice Mamey sapotes for $6.99 a pound, ataulfo and Madame Francis mangoes).   Alas, next time at least I have some other reference points to scope out.  For the minute (well less than 25 hours) I was in Barbados, it looked good.  Mangoes are coming into season (I had no time to get anything locally) and there were plenty of breadfruits.  I saw some sugar apples here and there and had a local describe some of the other fruits which were unfamiliar to me "(duncs" anyone?)

Dunks is Ziziphus mauritiana, also known as Indian Jujube here. Definitely one of my favorite fruit. The ones that you can find in the Caribbean are usually not as good as the grafted variety from Thailand that is found in the US. The trees in Caribbean are also full of thorns and the fruit are usually much smaller.

I think the Bajan "duncs" are the Trinidadian "Downs or Dongs" or the american version is Jujube.  Sheehan, can you confirm?

Yup. Duncs is downs/dongs. A few people in Trinidad now have the grafted variety from Thailand but I don't think it is widely available throughout the island yet.
