Cashew Apple growing in South Florida. Talk to me people?
« on: October 18, 2012, 06:15:09 PM »
I would like to start growing a few trees. Today I picked up two six foot tall beauties. They are seed grown and the seed originated from the Dominican Republic. My understanding is that they have perfect flowers but require cross pollination. Someone please elucidate me?

Thanks.

Jason "Pepe"

I will post some pictures later.  :D

I cannot say that I know much about growing cashew but I have one small cashew tree in a pot. It's flowered once but no fruit. It looks like it's going to flowing again soon hopefully I will get fruits this time.

I would try to grow a dwarf variety.  http://www.embrapa.gov.br/english/portfolio/fruits%20and%20vege/precocious/
Here in SW Florida, you can grow them.  They are a bit cold sensitive when young.  Just plant them in a protected area.

Pepe,
One tree will do it!
You don't need more that one tree to produce fruits. Cross pollination may increase production, but it is not necessary!  I have a couple friends here in the area growing them and they have only one tree, each.
My tree was knocked down several times and I no longer grow one.  My tree produced several fruits by itself.

Non-dwarf cashews may become huge trees.  Get the facts!  Some varieties are grown just for the nut (actual fruit).  Others are grown for the pseudo-fruits. Some varieties, the pseudo-fruits are absolutely delicious and some others are pretty nasty!  Good luck!

I chopped mine down because it got big FAST and I had not allotted that much space to it. And since my husband has a nut allergy and probably would not eat the fruit to be safe, there was one more reason to get it the ax. Also, y'all should know by now that I love chopping down trees. :)

I had Caju juice and macerated Caju in my caipirinhas while I lived in Brazil. It has a unique chalky, sweet flavor that is very pleasant.

All I can tell you is that they hate the soil in the Redlands. Every time I have planted one they have gone horribly chloritic and eventually died. I guess they don't like alkaline soil  :(

Katie,
Have you ever had "batida de caju"?  Cachaca, suco de caju, acucar, e gelo!
Cachaca (Kashahssah=sugar cane liquor; suco de caju = cashew juice; acucar=sugar; gelo=ice)

Katie, you got email!

So your saying its not my soil? Well then why do my trees always get chloritic?

Berto- a batida is always blended, isn't it? I had strawberry batidas with vodka. I was referring to a traditional caipirinha but with mashed Caju instead of lime. Also delicious. :) Now that I have a miracle fruit bush I make my cocktails with no sugar and less guilt.

Wow!
Thanks for the info. You are all awesome and I truly appreciate your comments and suggestions. These trees as I said are from the Dominican Republic and no more info is available. Time will tell if we have something decent. I will keep you all informed on the progress and will post some pics later this weekend.

Thanks to all of you.

Katie please keep the axe sharp in case I need to borrow it! LOL  ;D

David,
Do you hug and talk to your trees at least once a week?  ;D ;D ;D ;D
Try that and also feed them some sequestrene 138 and some manganese sulfate! I like techmangam! Do not use both at the same time.
Love plus good nutrition equals happy and non-chloritic trees! ;) ;)

Katie,
You can blend in a blender or you can just mix and stir in a glass.

I do love them, but sometimes they dont love me back!

What is sequestrene 148? In the past I have just fertilized them with standard fruit tree blend

David,
Correction -  Please read Sequestrene 138 instead of Sequestrene 148
http://www.golfventuresonline.com/labels/SEQUEST475.pdf
Carlos, an avocado grower in Homestead, and a member of this forum introduced me to the use of sequestrene 138 (iron).
You can use it as a soil drench or as a foliar spray.
I like to use one 1 quart of a teaspon mixed in two (2) gallons of rain water to feed my potted trees.  Great stuff!
A five (5) lb bag will last a long time.

Luc,
Yes indeed!  It is a cute little fruit.

I would be extremely happy if I could get a hold of a CCP 76, a CCP 09, or a BRS 189.  Those dwarf cashew varieties are supposed to be the best ones to eat out of hand.  The CCP 09 is good for both, to eat out of hand and to roast the nut (actual fruit).
