Title: Looking for a windbreak/hedge plant that can take freeze with a fast growth rate
Post by: TnTrobbie on March 30, 2018, 09:19:02 AM
Like the tittle says, I want something that can take the rare freeze with a fast growth rate. I plan on the occasional trimming (8-9ft) with a spread no more than 10ft wide. Was looking at neem but read that it can't take anything less that 30 o F. Murraya koenigii (curry tree) is a fast grower (I see some in Broward neighbourhoods) and the trimming can be used as mulch. Podocarpus was on the list but it seems like a slow grower for my needs. Recommendations welcomed. Bamboo is expensive :D. Looking to run a 200ft length for the windbreak.

Seedling Loquats...
https://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/loquat.html (https://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/loquat.html)

"Adaption: The loquat is adapted to a subtropical to mild-temperature climate. Where the climate is too cool or excessively warm and moist, the tree is grown as an ornamental but will not bear fruit. Well established trees can tolerate a low temperature of 12° F. The killing temperature for the flower bud is about 19° F, "

"Location: Loquats are wind tolerant and grow best in full sun, but also do well in partial shade. The round headed trees can be used to shade a patio. Loquats also make attractive espaliers."

"It is occasionally planted for living fenceposts, as the tree is long-lived, not much subject to disease, and the wood is hard and durable. Good quality logs are much sought-after by furniture makers in Central America, who prize its hardness and durability"

* Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki
* Illicium floridanum
* Callistemon sp.
* Pittosporum sp.

plant atemoya seeds 6 feet apart, you will have 6-2 feet growth and full coverage in under 2 years and it doesn't cost you anything. these grow quickly in Florida. foliage is very dense and should help.

I'm planting a 350 ft row of edible bamboo, 35 plants 10 feet apart. Since I know they will take a couple of years t look like anything I am also using a Tithonia diversifolia perennial sunflower hedge for the first couple of seasons. It can get over 10 feet w x h twice or three time a year with prunings, has pretty yellow flowers. Grows easy from 1 ft. long finger-thick cuttings stuck in place during Florida rainy season, strikes roots very quickly. The prunings lay down beside the hedge and it mulches itself.
