Grafted Achachiru flowering in South Florida
« on: April 14, 2015, 08:44:54 AM »

I found a few flowers on my grafted Achachiru from PR this morning. The tree is about 5 years old and in a 15 gallon pot.  I hope some set fruit!

Looks intentionally blurry. I think you're trying to pass off G. intermedia flowers as achachairu.

He shouldn't be congratulated. It's not like he has a 10ft tall longkong seedling growing outdoors.

I told you its a 10ft Longkang not Longkong.. LOL

I will post better pictures this evening.

All it took was a couple tablespoons of that superior fertilizer mix a few weeks ago and she sent out blooms!

Congratulations Patrick, I'm jealous. My plant is only about 18 inches tall so I've got many years before mine will fruit. Keep us updated!

Nothing really.. Just an occasional foliar spray when I do my yard, some 8-3-9 when I remember.

Congratullations! Have you considered planting it in ground?

I wounder if a grafted achachairu also takes in the tropics so long to start producing...

Congrats Patrick! Can you please post a pic of the full tree? I've have one on the ground, that's about 5 + feet,  for a few years it grows very slow but your branches look about the same sizes.

that's cool...

your growth is all lateral..

the ones i have (seedlings in 15 gal pots, about 7ft tall, 6-7yr old) are much taller...but I doubt they will fruit anytime soon...

i remember the one at fruit and spice had a trunk the size of my thigh before it flowered!  and was about 10ft x 8ft wide.

(btw...I'm anti-jinxing you now...I have had a vision that your fruits will ripen! Amen)

Let's see if we can rekindle an old debate. Does that say garcinia brasilensis on the pot?

I remember Chris Rollins (or somebody else--lol)  saying that when grafted, garcinias grow laterally.  Can't remember if it was G. mangostana they were talking about but after seeing the pics, it looks to be the case with achachachacha

I put out a video and a picture of how the Thais graft for dwarf mangosteens.  It all depends on where you take the cuttings from that will determine how the grafted plant will grow.  I've had Ian and Felipe in PR tell me the same thing when we were looking at grafted plants from Jardines Eneida.  All of the grafted achachairu that I've seen have been spreading rather than growing up.  Kind of makes sense recalling how the trees grow.  Much easier to grab cuttings from the lower branches...all of which are hanging down.  I'm sure if a more apical dominant leader was chosen, a more upright plant would be the result.

Let's see if we can rekindle an old debate. Does that say garcinia brasilensis on the pot?

The label from Jardines Enieda reads "Bacupari- G.brasilensis"

It was a one gallon in 2011.

My grafted "Mameyito" as they call it (its a lemon drop) has the same growth habit.

@Jay - No new growth at the flower sites but some on the branches.

Very nice it's really compact! Patrick is there a reason you have it in a container? They are cold hardy we have a few mornings bellow 40F almost every year and it's unfazed, no freeze burn or dieback. We have a mature Garcinia growing in the Fullerton Arboretum that's loaded every year you should have no problem growing it in the ground in your area.
