Oro Negro fruit at Wal-Mart
« on: December 31, 2016, 10:18:50 AM »
I bought 2 avocados at one of the Cape Coral Florida stores on Dec23. They were labeled as Brooks slimcados with 4223 stickers but fruit was green and had right shape and size for Oro Negro. Sure enough they ripened black after a few days. I ate one this morning and it had the same buttery great taste. A very pleasant surprise. Worth a look at Florida Wal-Marts for a little while....

I thought I was seeing things when reading what you wrote. Hard to believe with the poor known fruit production of that variety, that it would be commercially sold at a Walmart. How much are they going for? I have a tree and actually now have Oro in a pot. Will be selling it!!

I bought two black avocado fruit from the local Supermarket for $12. It didn't taste like the regular avocado aka hass  ::). The flavor was unique and had smokey/meaty flavor,.

I'm not sure which cultivar it was but, I'm sure it came from the USA because each fruit had a sticker/label stating that this fruit was grown in the USA.

Anyway, I have two nice Black avocado seedling, Hopefully they will do well in here.

Personally,  dont think Oro Negro is that great of an avocado.

As for stickers, they are a wonderful thing.   Keep in mind,  they are usually applied to the fruit by the distribution company.   Some food for thought, I recently purchased some pink grapefruit that had stickers on them identifying them as navel oranges (the sticker literally said "navel").

I dont think there is anyone growing Oro Negro commercially in sufficient amounts to make it to Walmart. Only posiblility is that the pickers picked some with the monroes since there is a similarity. Most pickers would know this, in my grove the pick the monroes ald leave the ON in the tree.
Agree with bsbullie, not such a great avocado. This year some fruit did not rippen evenly even though it turned black on the tree. Production was like 40% of monroes this year.

For my taste, Oro is an amazing oily rich cado! IMO If it produced moderately well and consistent in many area's, it would gain number one status in Florida, just my guess.

My tree had a few for the first time.  They shriveled up as they ripened off the tree, but were still edible.  Is that normal?  Flavor was good but nothing phenomenal.

While we haven't seen any pictures of what the OP purchased, ON vs Hass should be easily distinguishable.

I'll give the tree a few more years to establish itself, but if it doesn't improve, it will be top-worked.

Knowing the fruit quality,  I would begin the top working/replacement process sooner.  Much better varieties  and/or fruit to take up thst space.

For the homeowner is fine if you like that canistel like, egg salad, catalina creamy flavor but for commercial production also has to be consistent and is not. Also this year I detected some post harvest fungal problems as well with the same spray program as my Monroe which keep the Monroe super clean

Shivering is one of the issues I notice. Late fruit has thick skin and we are accustomed to wait for avocados to get soft. ON by the time it gets soft if may be over ripe and starts shivering. Also if they get picked too early they don't ripen and shiver.

You say late fruit has thin skin?  Lula, Monroe, Nishikawa all have thicker skin.

Shriveling is never a good sign.   I have trouble seeing how an ON would be considered being picked too early at this date.  Unless it was left to over ripen on the counter or sat too long in the fridge after ripening, sounds more like an issue, probably isolated, with the fruit and/or tree.

I haven't learned to graft yet.  What's my best resource for learning?  Does YouTube have any good videos on the subject?

The avocados were $2.50 each and every one in the bin looked like the same variety. all were green in the bin but ripened black.   Either Brooks has a rootstock that Oro Negro performs well on, or someone picked them from a tree thinking they were Monroe.
I know with some fruits (apples), using the right rootstock with a given variety can make a huge difference in fruit quality and yield.
