Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Nuomichi lychee-Wee
« on: August 08, 2023, 12:07:04 PM »
I could be wrong but I don’t think FZX is sweetheart. The former is partially green when ripe but sweetheart is fully red. I also think sweetheart tastes better

It was confirmed by a Chinese professor more than 15 years ago.He was in Florida for a lychee symposium. They all get fully red with maturity.I have both growing in my grove and Nuomici all fruited for decades.

Thank you! Its good to have official confirmation. I agree, sweetheart is FZX and that it is ripe with green on it--I actually prefer it when it still has some green. I am going to say that the person who gave it the English name knew that, too. I am told that FZX in Chinese means "Royal Concubine's Laugh." A royal concubine would be the Emperor's sweet heart. So, that all fits to me. There does seem to be a slight difference between the mis-identified "Florida Hak Ip" and Sweet Heart. What Mike T said about there being different strains of FZX makes a lot of sense to me. Just like Sweet Song appears to be a strain of Tai So (Mauritius).

Good to know. It’s interesting how the cultivar name changes. If true, it seems that I like sweetheart better because it’s picked more ripe? In my experience though, sweetheart loses green color quite long before it’s fully ripe.

Brad, that would be good to see what you think. You tasted most of them so I would be interested in the taste comparison with the Kaimana lychee you ate. I was thinking of adding the Kaimana but will wait to hear what you think of this one.

Did they have kaimanas on wee?

Sidenote, we got lychees from the asian market yesterday for 2$ a lb.  They were pretty good ones for the price.

The kaimanas from Hawaii are super good but they cost a fortune.

I thought the kaimana from Hawaii is pretty good but it lacks the complexity compared to top varieties like NMT. Guiwei or Kwai Mai or Kwai Mei is supposed to be very flavorful too, but I haven’t tried it

The scion from this one came from the original group buy and it was just labeled An Hai so I’m just calling this one An Hai. I have what’s called an Improved An Hai which is supposed to be slightly better quality but I won’t have confidence in any of these varieties until I have fruited them.

I am extremely upset at some of the farmers from the group buy because myself and many of my friends have purchased the trees only to find out that some of the trees, mostly males, were just seedlings. Some of the farmers may also have been selling varieties like Biqi and potentially labeling them as something else like Black Carbon or Big Black Carbon. We really won’t know for sure what we got from the group buys until we fruit them and that should be happening within the next couple of years.

There’s also the whole issue with the Root Knot Nematodes.

I completely stopped planting any Yangmei plants originating from China because I noticed a general decline in the health of those trees compared to trees I grafted onto my own disease free rootstocks.

Simon, totally agree with you. The seller of the group order literally trolled us all into buying seedlings. I have several contacts that I converse with and it turns out that there is no male tree market in China. My explanation for this is that there are so many wild male trees just floating around that there is no reason to make more (the main pollination is wind). Some have claimed that grafted female trees will fruit by themselves, but I think that happens there because of the large amount of wild plants there. But nonetheless, the male trees were seedlings.
Luckily a lot my trees I have have sent out rootstock growth. So def a good chance of a male coming up on the tree.

I know there are many synonyms for varieties so it's hard to clear things up lol.

I hope we start to see more grafted plants on regular rootstock hitting the market. So many people have asked me for them, but I just can't keep up with demand. For now, I recommend people to stock up on trees. Lot of new varieties hitting the market, so then you can get scions and graft...it's like a scion farm. They grow so fast. Get rootstocks and then graft on to the native stock for your region. Scions of new varieties (even common ones too) are basically impossible to come by right now, that's why I suggest trees as source of scions now, but again hopefully we can see more people offering them in the coming years.
that's right. In China there are abundant of male trees and female trees can be pollinated by wind easily. you are right that there no male tree market in China. I only knew of one grower who grafted some male trees and he now stopped doing so. it makes no sense to have male trees with named varieties...

there is also no yangmei varieties that fruits in October, not even in August. Dongkui is about the most late ripening variety and even for Dongkui the season is already done in China by late June, except at some high altitude areas.

Sunset tastes great to me, very flavorful, but the fruits are small. It takes very long to ripen and has thick skin. Benefits are that they keep well on and off the tree. I just wish they are bigger.

The Michael has very strong sweet and tart tastes. Probably too tart for most people but I like it. Size is small, flesh is between white and orange, more white.

I up potted my lone biqi survivor into a spicier soil mix. It seems to be doing ok. I lost my other biqi and regret not just cutting it up into branches and grafting to the Californica I have. I will cut the male up and graft when it gets over the transplant shock and boosts again.

I was lucky try 1lb of yangmei fruit and it’s the real deal. One of the better rare fruits I tried with a near perfect balance of sweet, sour, bitter and very juicy. I get the hype now.

Your tree look good. When it sends out red buds, or red new leaves, or leaves with red hue, it means the tree is very healthy. Good luck.

The fruits are indeed very delicious and very unique. I’m glad that you like them. Which variety did you try?

Subscribed! Nice job Brad. The fruits and trees are just beautiful. Looking forward to more great videos.

Do you need to thin Reed? My small reed graft is holding too many fruits (marble size), and I thinned some but need to do more if they don’t drop.

I pretty much gave up growing pineapples. Too much investment on space, water, time to get just one fruit in 2+ years, especially since I don’t have the space for it.

That said, WJ/sugarloaf is delicious.if you have space and patience it’s great

Wow so happy to see many people are have successes. 👍

Brad my RH is also very tasty. It’s supposed to be the same one that Martha has. Seems Fatter than Kaz’s RH

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sweetheart lychee new growth problem
« on: April 26, 2022, 02:49:18 PM »
For me it’s mainly related to weak growth, for example, early Spring flushes, when the growth is weak and slow. When it warms up the tree grows much faster, the flushes are mostly fine. Mulching heavily helps lychee growth for me.

Wow looks great! My China white is still small and I hope I can get some fruits next year.

It seems that white ones are sweeter in general

Ken, thanks for posting the comparison of the Big Jim fruits cut open. The China White is better tasting than either one so you better graft some of this. Send me a PM if you don't have it in your collection. I'm pretty sure the China White will also taste better than the Chian Doll that I grated recently. Next year I should be able to compare the China White and China Doll fruits.

Hi Kaz, great to know. I have one China white and one China doll graft. The China white is doing better. It seems that I should take some cuttings of CW and make a couple of new grafts

Ken,

They look great. Can you post a photo of the Big Jim White fruit cut in half. I have many of the China White loquats and they tastes excellent, it's a keeper for sure.

Kaz, the white vs orange big Jim

Battle of big Jim and big Jim white!

Big Jim wins the size (85g) vs the white (65g), while the white wins the taste. I picked the big Jim too early and they still had too much tartness. It would have been a more fair game if I allows them to ripen a bit more.

Left is red Himalayan, middle is Australian green and right is the LE Cooke’s select black Pakistan.

They are all tasty. I like the BP the best, then RH and the AG. But my wife prefer the AG the best, followed by BP and RH. They are all worth growing.

Yeah it’s 2021. Not an entry to the contest but to show how big peluche can get

Yes, that's a good idea, or the stem should be cut right at the fruit flesh. I see some whopper fruits on my tree, so I hope to take some photos and weigh the fruits in a few weeks. I may need to thin out one of my Peluche fruit cluster to see how large a few fruits can get. Needs to be larger than your 101 gram fruit.

Mine was 106g with 1/2” stem attached.

I got my cuttings from Oolie and also from CRFG. Both looked the same to me. I grafted them to 4 different multigrafted trees. They cannot compete against other varieties so I had to remove other varieties on one tree
