Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Question for Fruitlovers!

The gel is agar. I think it’s a seaweed extract. I still have a few bottles of it when I was fooling around with micropropagation via tissue culture.

Just don’t add sugar to it and it won’t go moldy.

28
I would shade it completely with indirect sun and keep it in a humidity dome.

Your Thai red looks excellent! I've got a guava similar to yours but I haven't received fruit from it yet, definitely gets me excited to try it!
Thanks. You probably have the other close variety called Malaysian. I have two, small seedling and 8' tall air-layer I think. Didn't get any fruit from either of them. Hopefully, next year, so I can compare the fruits and the taste.

Red Malaysian is one of the worst tasting guava to me. I got it at Lowe's. The taste is a little tart and bitter. But it sure is very fragrant, Lol.

I don't know whats wrong with yours but the ones I've tried tasted great. I've had bitter ones in the past but I think thats when the tree is younger. They also seem to taste a lot better in cooler months.

First on my favs list is a Thai Red, also called purple or black.

This is a magnificent looking fruit Galka. How does this taste compared to the Malaysian magenta? The Malaysian magenta is a pretty damn good guava when picked in the winter in so cal. Your Thai looks even more appealing. I am curious about taste. Im not a big fan of soft guavas but the deep red color has piqued my interest.

Thanks Warren.

For everyone who bought scions, they were shipped early this morning. Thank you all for your support.

Hi Xue,
Is grafting guava now better than in Spring?

Sam,
Spring is always best. But I graft all year long.

34
I want to get the Sak Ip from you but is it a little late for grafting?

Fang, you can get anything from me anytime at no charge.

I just grafted a ton of longans and lychee. I got some pushing now. It's still warm during the day.

Very cool Simon. Will you leave or remove the paper clip? If you leave the clip, would it cause damage to the tree in the long run?

excellent work Simon. I am surprised the extra roostock would shorten the juvenile stage this quick. I have a sabara in ground from a 15 gal for almost five years. Its close to eight feet tall and the trunk about the size of my ankel and no fruit. Do you see flower buds emerging on the main trunk as well or is it mostly at the end of the branches?

Slightly off topic. Do you guys know what’s the longan variety called from Florida that has large fruit with thick brown skin?

Hi Patrick. I like them slightly under ripe with a slight shade of light green. When fruit starts to develop a shade of white/yellow, it loses a lot of that crispy texture but the fruit develops that tropical guava flavor and it becomes much sweeter.

Sorry Simon. I've been top working trees that are in ground only. I stopped grafting onto stand alone trees after Mimosa stopped selling seedings for $5 bucks.

If you like big, crunchy and sweet guavas, this is it. Crystal is the best guava, this variety fruits all season long. It is so good that i had to top worked all of my guava trees to this variety. Get yours before it is too late.

Thanks for the scions xue :)

If you like big crispy you need guava Pen....and if you like more sweet and crispy you need from taiwan. I buy 2 times crystal guava in Singapore and has no taste, nothing.

No idea what you’re talking about. Everyone who tried my fruit loved it. I was even able to convince mom guava eaters to plant one after trying it. Both fruit and trees are high demand.

Still have some left, Xue? I'd need 8 scions as guava is super hard to graft. Let me know and I'll send the Paypal.

Hey Thera,

I still got some that I could prune and send later today.

Thanks Socal0b

No international shipping for now.sorry.

Guavas and other trees have much higher success rate when grafted onto young tender shoots.

Pick up in Rosemead during the day.

Most sought after crunchy Asian guava. It is sweet, tart and the crispiest guava I ever had. 95% of the guava trees I have has been top worked to Crystal seedless. Local nurseries are selling 5 gal trees for $90-$120 if you can even find them.

Also the most prolific seedlessvbearer. Bears fruit in clusters. Must thin to get bigger fruits. Most of the crunchy seedless guavas are shy bearers.

$5 ea. minimum 4 scions. Shipping is $3.5 for first class or $7.5 for priority mail. Paypal is shenxue@gmail.com. Please send as friend or family.

Socal10b is an honest and down to earth person  ;D. You won’t be disappointed! He also has the healthiest looking MULTIPLE rootstocked avocado trees I have ever seen.

I just grafted some Wilson Seedless scions. From what I read they make a larger amount of cukes. Fuerte is another one that makes the cukes which I think is just poor pollination and they are small size.

Hey Josh,

How is the oil content and flavor on the Wilson Seedless?

Still have plenty of buddy tape and tie tape available for those who messaged me.
