I can't believe I missed the Haden Mangoes!  I saw that they had some of the largest and ripest Tommy Atkins I've seen in a long time but then again, they were Tommy Atkins and even though they were sweet, they were extremely fibrous and not strong on flavor. I only bought them in the hopes they were mislabeled.

Lucky Seafood continues to have good quality mangos but most the Manilla mangos out there now are of great to excellent quality. The Fruit Shop in Convoy also has great Manillas, Mamey Sapote, white Sapote, Longan, Rambutans, jackfruit and some tasty Manilla nubbin that are very small but extremely sweet with a paper thin atrophied seed husk. The Mira Mesa farmers market also has lots of fresh fruit including some good Cherimoyas. Some of the cherimoyas I picked up last week actually had a pinkish tint near the skin and tasted more acidic, very similar to a Selma.

Could you get a picture of the mini mangoes? I mentioned them last summer and someone on the boards here wanted to see.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Corona Avocado

For what its worth I compared Corona to Sir Prize tonight. Sir Prize had a similar nuttiness + wateriness as the Corona, but also the itchiness of Hass (in my mouth). According to the flyer in my box, Sir prize is the "best of the hass type avocadoes". For me it was worse than Corona. My wife didn't like the Sir Prize at all. Does have a much smaller pit though.

I'll pay attention to that and see if it correlates. I thought it was the reverse though, that pure mexican was the only non-toxic leaves.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm paying through the nose to try different varieties, but seems cheaper to me than buying or grafting them and waiting years for my own fruit. Corona wasn't even on my watch list and I'd like to graft it now. Also have Sir Prize lined up to taste in a couple days.

Sitting there comparing Hass and Corona I realized that my mouth has some kind of mild allergic reaction to Hass but not corona. Mouth gets all tingly and thats one of the reasons I can't eat more than one Hass at a time. I've noticed it in the past but never made much of it.

My imac hasn't recognized my sdcard or camera for a while but have a new computer so can upload pictures again.

Update on interspecific grafts on brush cherry:

Surinam cherry grafted on brush cherry dried up and died within days of cutting off the donor sapling.

Rose apple survived for a couple months, but eventually dried up and died as well.

Sweet java plum has been unchanged since cutting off the donor mid-january. I clipped the leaves in half at the same time. The leaves have remained supple. No new growth though. And a nurse branch off the side really started bulking up.

SO I decided to add Wax Jambu to the experiment. Not my favorite fruit so I hadn't started with it, but might work better since its known to be graft compatible with other syzygiums. Ben Poirier grafts rose apple and wax jambu (don't remember what order). I approach grafted the wax jambu onto that nurse branch. This time I just wrapped in grafting tape and nothing else.

The rose apple graft is on the left. The wax jambu graft is on the right on the beefy nurse branch. Unfortunately I also caught another brush cherry shoot in the background in between. Ignore that.

Maybe the vacuum cause some inhibitory gasses to evacuate. Could replicate that.

First two were probably 8-9 oz, remaining two are 8.5 and 10.6 oz measured. So, probably 9 oz average. Will post pics of insides tonight when we eat another.

Hass on top, Corona below. Notice the light green tinge w/o any orange.

Funny. I had looked there and didn't see it in the list, but if you search it is. Thanks.

Rated as only "good". I disagree. I'd rate it as excellent. First time I've eaten an avocado w/o any dressing/salt or anything and wanted to just sit and eat 2 more.

I also note that the fruit are early, but that could easily be different orchard locations or just the weather this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Corona Avocado
« on: April 11, 2014, 11:03:20 AM »
I subscribe to a couple avocado of the month clubs, avocadodiva and avocadoofthemonthclub, and a few days ago got a box from the latter. It contained Hass and "Corona". The Corona was wonderful. All the nuttiness of the hass with a bit of the florida avocado wateriness that made it fresh. Think of all the hass flavor with less fat. The flesh was firmer. Fruit the size of a largish Hass. I've had two and the seed from the first was bigger than hass and from the second smaller.

I did a search for "Corona Avocado" and can't find mention of it. Lots of stuff about shears, packing houses and the town.

Anyone heard of it? Perhaps its a ripoff of some other avocado?

pic coming of hass on left and corona on right, fully ripe.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Himalayan Mulberry
« on: April 10, 2014, 11:09:06 AM »
From reading online Pakistan I mulberry is same as himalaYin mulberry.  I have persian mulberry and it's really delicious sweet tart juicy small round fruits. I also grafted Pakistan I mulberry on it and it took.

I grew up in northern india eating these long sweet tart mulberries not sure what those were called but tasted very good. Pakistan I mulberry has no acidity for me and tastes bland sweet.
Agree. Just grafted persian black and kaester onto my pakistani because I like the tartness too. If you find a source for the mulberries you describe, let us know.

I tried something labelled 'Himalayan' at Exotica this weekend and it tasted the same as my Pakistani, tasted the day before. The fruit seemed smaller (thinner and shorter) judging from the handful I saw.

How about Papaya? Shallow roots, fast growing, often replant every 3-5yrs, so there wouldn't be any permanent roots to insinuate themselves. Pretty sure they love nitrogen as well. I remember reading they love being planted in composted manure and dirt. Certainly are doing well in the steer manure and clay I put them in.

I believe your name is related to the english Cauldron, which ultimately derives from Latin Caldarium for cooking pot and Calidus for hot.  Perhaps a play on that? Can capture your name, heat and food all at once.

Nick, there are a lot better tasting varieties than McDill, Suebelle, etc. I have a variety that has a butterscotch taste, and others that are more complex. An old timer here in San Diego county has a few acres of 20 or more varieties. The scion wood has been distributed to a lot of people in California.
Nice.

As you know dennis I've been looking into this myself. Haven't found a good answer so far.

and btw welcome to the forum :)

I'm sorry but hasn't the IPCC been exposed as a fraud?

974
Adam - i confirmed they are Zill Black and they are grafted.  Prices are standard grated plant pricing.
Don't sell retail :( Didn't bother asking if they ship to CA.

Anyone in California have it?

975
Is there a source for Zill Black, or will I need to graft it?
