Is a Sweetheart Lychee the same as a Hak-Ip lychee? If they are indeed different varieties, would this be the best way to differentiate one from the other(?): If there is an aftertaste, it’s a Hak-Ip. If there is no aftertaste it’s a Sweetheart.
Report:
This year, the Hak-Ip lychee tree’s overall fruit quality and production was just great, even though the location is somewhat iffy (it’s near: the exterior wall of house and several other large fruit trees (Keitt Mango & Black Sapote)). The fact that the Hak-Ip lychee is also near some beehives may have been a positive contributing factor to quality fruit production.
The Hak-Ip fruit size was medium to larger sized with no noticeable miniature sized fruit. Over 80% of the fruit had chicken tongue (small sized) seeds. And, the taste was delicious (aftertaste and all).
Please excuse that there are no pictures. I participated, along with a herd of Lychee Zombies
, in devouring all of them when the fruit reached peak ripeness.
I’m really hoping that one of the characteristics of this Hak-Ip variety is that the fruit production and quality keeps getting better with time.
