Sweetheart Lychee 2019 FL
« on: April 19, 2019, 06:36:45 PM »
Looks like I will finally be able to try some sweetheart lychee off my tree. Was planted in 2014 and I never really fertilized it until last year. Once I did it instantly became fuller and greener and seems like it it’s going to reward me with a nice crop. I’m excited! It has atleast like 8 or more pinnacles like the picture below. ;D

Oh sorry to hear. I think the bees were hard at work on my tree.

Awesome. I've had good luck once my fruits reached your size, but overall it's hit and miss with my trees.

A video I took of my sweetheart lychee....purchased sometime ago from lychee tree nursery in Stuart and let me tell you it fruits every year, large pink golfball sized fruits with chicken tongue seeds. I’ve read before that a lychee won’t fruit if not exposed to sun, whether or not it’s true I planted in an area of my yard that’s always sunny. Here’s a vid: https://youtu.be/L8gkifImZ3w

Seems like the lychee growing climate keeps creeping north every few years. You must be in the right spot. You've got quite a nice harvest there.

My tree is around 10 years old. Unfortunately, it only sets a couple of dozen fruits per year. But those few fruits are cherished. One of the best fruits I've ever eaten. The maritius is bland compared to sweet heart.

Now I want a Sweetheart Lychee tree. :)

I grafted a Hak Ip onto my Brewster or was it Mauritius, I understand Haak Ip is similar to Sweetheart but not the exact same tree as I had initially thought.

With everyone raving on Sweetheart, I may have to get one.

Uh-huh.  I've been thinking that somewhere between Lake Wales and Lake Placid (Lake Wales Ridge) is the place to be to grow all of our faves--lychees, mangos, avocados, low-chill peaches, persimmons, sapodillas, atemoyas!

There is a Hak Ip that is different from Sweetheart, but most likely yours isn’t.  From what I understand, there was a labeling mix up of a tree used for propagation many years ago that resulted in a bunch of trees being sent out with the wrong name. I asked someone at Fruitscapes if their HakIp and Sweetheart came from the same trees and they said yes.

Great looking fruit everyone. Lychees are one of my favorite fruits. For those of you that have difficulty getting fruit to set on Sweethearts, have you tried following Lycheesonline.com pruning advice?

One of my friends has a Sweetheart Lychee that produced well for many years and he used to give his trees kelp.

That’s awesome yea my tree was planted in 2014 as well. I paid for a 20 gallon and got like a 3 gallon tree in a 20 gallon pot. But it’s been the tree that has grown the most in my yard.

2014

Is a Sweetheart Lychee the same as a Hak-Ip lychee? If they are indeed different varieties, would this be the best way to differentiate one from the other(?): If there is an aftertaste, it’s a Hak-Ip. If there is no aftertaste it’s a Sweetheart.

Report:

This year, the Hak-Ip lychee tree’s overall fruit quality and production was just  great, even though the location is somewhat iffy (it’s near: the exterior wall of house and several other large fruit trees (Keitt Mango & Black Sapote)). The fact that the Hak-Ip lychee is also near some beehives may have been a positive contributing factor to quality fruit production.

The Hak-Ip fruit size was medium to larger sized with no noticeable miniature sized fruit. Over 80% of the fruit had chicken tongue (small sized) seeds. And, the taste was delicious (aftertaste and all).

Please excuse that there are no pictures. I participated, along with a herd of Lychee Zombies  ;) , in devouring all of them when the fruit reached peak ripeness.

I’m really hoping that one of the characteristics of this Hak-Ip variety is that the fruit production and quality keeps getting better with time.

Just to add I don’t totally get the being slightly north in Martin county equals better fruit set, as was down at Lara farms few weeks ago and his trees were loaded multiple diff cultivars as well. Gotta tip prune your tree after each season even if no fruit, I suspect that helps the next crop.
