Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can people help me best variety of FIG
« on: October 27, 2015, 03:49:42 PM »
I highly suggest you go venture around ourfigs forum and figs4fun forum.... General concensus there dubbed Black Mediera, col de dame blanc, and Smith the greatest from numerous members.... Black mediera has sold for over 300 dollars on ebay for a small plant.... For many top varietys you can end up in serious bidding wars.... One fig tree sold for over a thousand

they come  from Hawaii.... to lazy to google the name....They are have a texture of Jeloo... yes just like Jello.... has individual fruitlets similar to Pomegranate but a little larger and different in shape with a seed in each one...very sour and acidic with a flavor reminiscent of lime with a tiny bit of sweetness....not much at all.....

Overall terrible fruit but beautiful exotic look, color, interior and exterior.....shame the taste fails to compare.

They don't come from Hawaii. Originally they come from Africa. The real name is African Horned Melon. The New Zealanders changed the name for marketing purposes to kiwano. Several years ago there was a big push to export them from New Zealand to USA, but it didn't go over very well. They were very expensive and most people were disappointed in the taste. I think they made a mistake marketing it as a fruit. It really tastes more like a vegetable, namely cucumber, to which it is closely related. The lime green gelatinous juice is good squeezed onto a salad or used as a base for salad dressing. As other people pointed out, it can easily take over your garden and become invasive, especially in tropical climates. The whole plant is very poky with spines. Its good qualities are that it is very productive, the fruit keeps very well, and it does not get stung by fruitfly, unlike cucumber. A good alternative for areas that can't grow cucumber due to fruit flies.

I stand corrected Oscar lol

Terrible tasting Fruit IMO

Purchased 11 Trees from TT... Everyone in the ground is doing great.... My Edward looks lije a nice tree for only 2 years growth...the others in ground are doing ok if you facter in them surviving Snow without protection, losing 12 inches. From frost on a seperate occasion, dogs biting tge trunk and branches, being greedy and fruiting first year Trees which stunts growth.... My Potted Trees seem to grow extremely slow when conpared to the inground Trees.

Yes its breaking the Law, but imagine the good that will come from it.

Hope this idea spreads across the Nation. Imagine walking through your local park grabbing a Sweet Tart Mango, or grabbing a Flavor King Pluot for those of us up North.... Anyone know these guys CRFG???  ::)

*EDIT- just realized there are no ornamental Mango trees...unless you're talking about Tommy Atkins Mango Trees.

So had my first Edward today...slightly overipe but still sweet and delicious... I think the Nam Doc Mai off my tree still has a better taste for a  sweet mango... Yes I know these are about 3-4 year old trees...hard to judge off of 1 or 2 mangos off an immature tree....just saying.... Nam Doc mai has popping sweetness that is very good!

Bully, I dont have nothing against you, but you are a bit wrong about trying to change it's name here in the forum... maybe you are right this is an english speaking forum, but here we are people from South América, chirimoya is native from Perú, and the native people calls it just chirimoya, as we do it here and in many other countries (millon of people calling it chirimoya)... also at Spain, Portugal and maybe many other non american countries...

by the way: dont you know why did you (the english speaking people) changed/corrupted its wording to "cherimoya"? I mean, historically

Look man... we changed all the spanish words and kept no... deal with it lol

65
Can we plwase change the title of the thread to "cherimoya".  As it reads now, chirimoya, most would be referring to it as a custard apple,  or A. reticulata,  when we are in fact referring to a cherimoya, or A. cherimola.

Bully my Wife calls them that too... I think it's a spanish term.

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / Re: Fig Trees or cuttings.
« on: October 16, 2015, 07:54:09 PM »
Is the heavy price tag for some fig cuttings worth the money? The Col de Dame blanc cuttings seem to go for lots of money.

I'll let you know... 3 small ones on my tree that will hopefully be ready by the end of this month! Just had a Violette de Bordeux.... holy shit such an incredible tasting fruit....not your typical fig flavored fruit...... tastes like a poppingly honey sweet berry flavored Jam that was very jammy like.....could have spread it on some toast easily!!!

Guys when do i pick this knockout mango off the tree!!??!!

I cut off all flower panicles before I deployed to help promote new Growth...apparently fruiting was a top priority for this tiny 7g tree... Kind of happy i get to taste this wonder before I move to Virginia...hopefully the immaturity of the tree wont drastically affect the flavor.
