Sweet Tart vs Cecilove Mango
« on: July 07, 2020, 01:16:14 PM »
First of all, how close are their flavors?  Then...

Does Cecilove have less problems and produce better than Sweet Tart?  Or is it still being evaluated?

Similar type of profile however I would be curious to see over time and if there is any consistent incorporation of a Carrie component (being its a Carrie seedling pollinated with ZINC) on "nursery grafted" trees.

I think the bigger issue here is that barring getting budwood from a select few, these trees are not being propagated for sale at this time.

Ok, still not being propagated.  I didn't know that.

Being that Cecilove is not available what other varieties would come the closest to tasting like sweetart? I have a sweet tart I am just curious.

To stay in the family, Kathy is an option but does not have the district tart component as ST.  It is more of a faint, balanced aubacid component.  To go out of the family box, for a super sweet fruit with the tart component, Pineapple Pleasure is an option (no relationship to ST).

bsbullie which one do you prefer Phoenix or Kathy and how do they compare? Does Phoenix have a subacid component? I order a Phoenix and will pickup  Saturday :)

P-22 I was told is out now. Supposedly it’s a ZINC Gary hybrid. Had one last year and it was pretty good.
Had the Indochinese aroma and taste different than ST maybe closer to ZINC.
If you like ZINC you will probably like P-22. I had ZINC for  the first time last year, never really paid to much attention to it before and really liked it, enough to find me a tree.

Phoenix,  hands down.  I would say its flavor profile is like a cross between Dot and Jakarta/O-15.

Very similar flavor to Sweet Tart. Planted trees have been a lot less vigorous though and it seems to flower easier than Sweet Tart.

Is less vigorous good, though, if you want a smaller tree?

I've had it confirmed that "less vigorous" growth would be a definite plus for a home garden.  However, Cecilove is not widely grown so this characteristic cannot be taken as a fact.

I wouldn’t be scared to try Cecilove. Sounds really good on paper.

Floridians, what a tree sets in California has no bearing on what it will do here.  What is that, a 3 -4 foot tree max?  Most intelligent people would not let their small trees hold any fruit.  It certainly is not going to truly be representative of what the fruit is...and it will put a true beating on that little tree.

Here's some bad news about Cecilove.  I noticed the Mango Men, or Campbell family, who put this variety on the map (Mom IS Ceci!), were not offering it for sale this year.  So I called them, and they said it didn't produce well for them this year and the quality was low.  So much for my notion of a Sweet Tart substitute.  They said that in fact they don't have any problems with Sweet Tart.  We'll see how Cecilove performs for Tropical Acres Farms, WPB.

I got to taste my own Kathy mangoes this year. My eyes lit up along with my wife’s and I’ve been lamenting the fact that I have no more space since the last one was eaten. BUT Rob just said a Phoenix is better than Kathy so now I’m feeling great because I have a few of them. Thanks Rob. From experience our taste buds are twins. Again I owe you more than you can imagine.

I never tried Cecilove.

Phoenix tastes perfectly allright to me every time I eat it, but my taste buds apparently can't taste some component that lights up so many other experienced tasters' eyes.  In fact, I don't remember anything about its taste from one day to the next, except that it was a pleasant, unobjectionable mango.

Sweet Tart's flavor I definitely remember, and I like it in small amounts.

Kathy I enjoyed very much in 2015 during its long season at Zills, while I was picking there that year.  I haven't found a fruit of it since that matched my good memories.

So tell me, Har.  How does Carla compare to those three?  Generally better in your opinion?  Is it a mango with a super-fruity flavor?

We have several young trees that produced decent crops this year. The fruit have been outstanding, and were excellent the two prior years as well.

I had some Carla from the original tree, in 2015.  I liked it, and was impressed with the clean fruits, productivity, open growth habit and ease of picking.  I am not sure that I would recognize the flavor now, in any kind of blind tasting.  The season was late, not very late.
