Citrus General Discussion / Re: Trying A New Growth Medium

I believe chicken grit is granite while Turface is hardened clay. You can use Napa floor dry #8822 instead of Turface.

Does anybody use the gritty mix? (Equal parts pine or fir bark, Turface MVP and Grani-I-Grit. It supposedyl outlasts the 5:1:1 mix.) I have used it and it seems OK, although the pots are very heavy.
I also use the 5:1:1 mix but some of my trees have gotten root rot in it, so am considering switching to gritty mix.

Citrus General Discussion / Can I graft now?
« on: September 27, 2021, 10:36:56 PM »
I am thinking of ordering budwood from CCPP  to graft onto some of my trees. My trees will be overwintered indoors at about 65F with artificial light in mid October. Can i do it now or should I wait until until spring?

I dislodge soil by quickly moving the tree up and down in water. Using fingers might break more fine roots.

What would cause only two branches, and not the rest, to grow so quickly?

I have a trifoliate that I rooted from a cuttings of an unknown roostock. It recently put out two branches with very long thorns. Other branches have small thorns. What is going on?

I water so that a little comes out of the drain hole.
Ian Tolley, the Australian citrus expert, in one of his videos, says to use just enough water so that a little comes out of the drain so that fertilizer is not drained away.

Millet, I nevertheless do appreciate your posting this article. I will keep my eye open for future articles on CYAN-365.

Millet, the The Citrus Industries site is not a peer reviewed scientific journal. I would like to see exactly how they conducted those studies and would like to see their detailed results. I have not been able to find any study of CYAN-365 in a peer reviewed scientific journal which makes me suspect that such a study does not exist and that their claims are simply marketing BS.

Millet, the article to which you provided a link only mentions the studies the company did with providing a reference to where these studies might be published. I strongly suspect that it is marketing hype.

The results are indeed impressive but I cannot find any of the studies to which they refer that show what a great supplement it is. Has it been evaluated in a peer reviewed scientific journal? Or were the studies performed by the manufacturer and not published. I take all of those results with a huge grain of salt.

Hi Millet. I use 5:1:1 soil mix and some of my trees still die from root rot. What could be the cause?

It seems that I got the last one from Logee's.

You need a permit to import seeds: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/planthealth/import-information/permits/plants-and-plant-products-permits/plants-for-planting/!ut/p/z1/fUxBDoIwELzzCi8ezUI0qEeCRkTjGXppVqxSLS20xejvbZBELriH2ZmdmQXiTSaeG8gccbSHsQ1E4pPf0HIlUUAGOQnpKYh3_moRHHfbTeBHyXp_SJahH6dzSLvirz8EIP-7Wd_t4yMLcn5vGhIBKZS07GUhw7rkhnZSWir4WaN-T32DVLWaXlXRmk7VAp1fMhS27A68qpW2X4_pitthrketLm0xNIz7qL-Uy5u7VyjETChrZoaxC9QPkn8A2fIj0w!!/

Two years ago, on a whim, I ordered a Shirokolistvennyi cutting from CCPP. Me, being Russian, thought it would be neat if I got a Russian citrus tree.
I grafted it but it failed. I rooted the rest of it. Last summer, it put out a relatively huge branch off to one side, so I cut it off. I could not just throw the cutting out, so I cut it in two and stuck them into Optisorb in a plastic cup. I taped anther plastic cup on top to maintain humidity. One of the two cuttings is now putting out new leaves.
So now I have two Shirokolistvennyi trees, with another possibly coming soon. But I have no idea what this variety tastes like!
So, has any of you tasted it and if so, how did it taste?

What type graft do you plant to use?

What brand fertilizer do you folks recommend for inground citrus?

70
Millet, thanks for the clarification.

I have decided to not foliar feed again. I used Millet's recipe for low biuret urea and Tween 20 and I got browning on the tips of new leaves. Older leaves are not affected.

Your tree has scale. Use horticultural oil or neem oil for treatment.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Poncirus winter protection
« on: September 04, 2020, 11:08:20 PM »
I am in zone 6a. I have a Poncirus trifoilata that I planted in ground this spring. It is about 3 feet tall. Do I need to provide winter protection? If so, would I need to include a heater?

Boston is in zone 6a. Does the Arnold Arboretum in Boston still have a Poncirus?
