I found a few flowers on my grafted Achachiru from PR this morning. The tree is about 5 years old and in a 15 gallon pot.  I hope some set fruit!

I know its a horrible photo but you get the drift..



I have seen these on one branch of my M.vexator  the past couple years, the tree is about 4'x4' age roughly 5yrs?

No fruit sets and all blooms appear on this one branch only.. How long before the tree begins to bloom all over from this stage (Adam)??

In case anyone was wondering.. My wife and I are still operating a very small nursery in West Palm Beach Florida.  While 80% of what we sell is brokered, we still maintain very low prices and excellent customer service.  My career has limited my ability to really promote or grow the business, but that's not what we are about anyway.  We were operating the business under my given name "Brooks" but unfortunately were unable to use the name for certain legal reasons.  Its really a shame, we spent four years developing a web position, and had just started to see results.  We have a new website www.lotusfruittrees.com and inside it we maintain a blog with up to date information about our maintenance of our home property that many find useful.  Feel free to contact my wife with local orders, we unfortunately do not ship at this time.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are dragon fruit thorns toxic?

I poked the back of my hand pretty well moving some Natural Mystic cuttings yesterday evening.  I am almost 100% certain I removed any trace of the thorns.  About an hour after my hand began to throb and has swollen a little as of today.  The area is red and super sore.  Anyone else have similar experiences?

I have been closely observing the growth on my four lychee trees and have notice that they continually flush, especially in areas that are being decimated by Sri Lankan weevils.  I wonder if the heavy loss of surface area acts like a steady pruning stimulating steady growth?  Is it possible that the weevils are keeping the trees from going dormant?

This is my Maha Chanok in June of 2011 right after transplanting out of a three gallon pot.


This is the same tree less than three years later with 124 fruit on it.


I fertilize all but three months of the year by air, ground, water, and prune every tip, I took out a main scaffold branch this winter that was 2 1/2" diameter.  I also run my sprinklers very heavily to maintain my lawn, and mulch about once every three months. This tree produced from year one.

I know we have discussed different brands of knives and how to sharpen them but I wanted to share my experience with these two products.

By using the two surfaces of the wet stone followed by the two sides of the strop (white and green polish) I have been able to EASILY bring the cutting edges of all grades of grafting knives to mirror surface, RAZOR sharp edges.  I brought an $8 eBay grafting knife edge to the point I could shave with it.  I had remembered Jeff H. mentioning the leather belt and couldn't get my edges past the "really sharp" point so I found the paddle strop above and bought it to stuff my Christmas stocking.   I am really impressed with the finished edge provided by this paddle.  I'm sure you could make one with a good quality cow hide.

I have started the process of multi grafting my in ground mango trees.  About a month ago I started adding scions to most of my trees and most have started pushing already!

So far I have compiled these combinations...

On Carrie (tree about 6 feet tall) - Mesk and Juliette

On Pineapple Pleasure (tree about 5 feet tall) - Gary, Coconut Cream, and Pina Colada

On Lemon Zest (tree about 8 feet tall) - Sweet Tart, Spirit of '76

On Cogshall (tree about 6 feet tall) - Mallika

On PPK (tree about 8 feet tall) - San Felipe, Fernandin, Cushman, Florigon, Zill, and Coconut Cream

On Ivory (tree about 9 feet tall) - ST Maui, and Keow Savoy

On NDM #4 (tree about 5 feet tall) - Fairchild

To be completed...

On Maha Chanok - Angie

On Pickering -?

On NDM? - ?

On J-12 - ?

Here are some photos some of the scions starting to push..  I have been using cleft grafts and side veneers with near 100% success!

So far I have taken 7 varieties of my ten mango trees and turned them into 28 total varieties in the same space if successful.

I will post pics as they progress.. If one scion tries to take over the tree I will lop it off and open the canopy.  I have been pruning my trees since planted so they have elaborate scaffolds to work with.

Noel Ramos will be presenting a new lecture/slideshow on his 2012 Puerto Rico Tropical Fruit Safari at the Davie Agricultural Extension meeting room on Monday April 1st.  The previous trip from 2011 was so much fun that this fruit obsessed group from several states got together again and had another incredible trip to the island of enchantment.  The presentation will feature over 100 color slides and covers their side trips to previous farms and some new locations including the El Yunque Rain Forest. Don’t miss it. For those of you in Palm Beach County, this presentation will also be given on June 12th at 7:30 pm at the monthly meeting of the Palm Beach Rare Fruit Council. Location will be the at the Mounts Botanical Garden meeting room.

There is a soda can at the base of the most recent picture, the tree is about thirteen feet tall and round.  I have tipped and had pretty good wind damage last summer as well.  In comparison, on the same "steroids", my Pickering, Nam Doc Mai 4, and Cogshall are smaller and older.  The tree is less than two years from a three gallon. Every one of the newest flushes has about 6-8 new branches, and just put out a decent flowering cycle that is still going on in the lower branches with some fruit set.

I have confirmed that the one gallon mango tree I purchased on Ebay two Aprils ago is NOT a Maha Chanok.  It set fruit last year but didnt hold any.  This year it held about ten till they reached this size then split! I know Cookie Monster had money on them being a Nam Doc Mai, I believe he is completely correct! 

Beware of GT3000 on Ebay from Thailand.  I attempted to work it out with him and he claims it is a Maha Chanok.  The tree cost me $80 with shipping!!

I did get a Maha from Excalibur right after this one was purchased, it was known then as a green eating "Mahachanole" which has been confirmed to be a genuine Maha Chanok based on original import documentation (and fruit of course).

I hope this information saves someone money!!

I figured we could start of list of things that are common mistakes we all make that could be possibly avoided by learning from others...

Things like

1. Removing plastic bags from plants that are still not able to root hydrate from grafting or bareroot recovery (usually a month), and finding out that full seal is better for the first weeks followed by gradual humidity reduction by slowly adding holes prior to total removal. 

2. Premature removal of grafting bands, tape, wax for inspection.  This usually ends up in being the cause of graft failure.  That stuff can remain for a couple months or more without the need of removal. 

3. Digging in pots to see if seeds are sprouting only to kill the seed.

4. Carelessly removing plants by pulling them out of pots instead of tipping the pot over and allowing them to gently slide out of the pot and into your hand.

5. Pruning at inappropriate times (before or during Winter, during Fruiting).

6. Not properly marking and separating Round-Up containers and sprayers (this is a fun one!)

7. Not dating pots, grafts, and seeds so you have no real idea of how long its been.

8. Marking pots "Later" and then losing the variety (also during repotting).

9. Being careless with shipping info and causing plants to spend more time on the road then necessary..

These pruners are my favorite, kind of a mix of Double-Cut and Felco-2 Design.  I have a pair that I use all the time and just ordered another for my stocking..  ;)
