Germination of chilean wine palm and che fruit
« on: January 20, 2021, 08:00:54 AM »
Have both these types of seeds to attempt sprouting. Didn't find too much on the subject of either fruit online. Does anyone have a tek for these species or can provide prudent info I should know? Thanks!

Root Che from cuttings they root easily and have yellow roots like mulberry. I’m not saying don’t start some from seed also, but it will take  longer to produce

Do che seeds need to be stratified?

I don't have any experience personally, but this looks like a good source of info about Chilean wine palm:

Have the seeds already for the che so pretty much might as well start them. Couldn't find info on needing stratification but since it's somewhat temperate I imagine it wouldn't hurt.

Read that tek on the palm seeds before making this thread. That's the best if not only info I could find. Somewhat scared to mess up the seeds by trying to crack them open. Figure the seed shells are so hard it may be necessary unless you wait some serious time for them to come up without that. Guess I'll have to take that chance. Only have 5 seeds. Would hope for 100% success but we all know how that goes. Give them a good smack with a hammer or something.

Messaged the guy I bought them from but never heard back unfortunately. Figure he might know since he's obviously growing the plants already.

Screw the Chilean wine palm though, I heard they don’t like our humidity. Go for parajubaea cocoides or p. Paraguayensis seeds

I might have some seeds in 40+ years or so if you can wait 😂.... bought this seedling last year and I hear they grow extra slow in the PNW:
