How to tell when Canistel are ripen
« on: December 28, 2020, 12:13:38 AM »
I bought a couple of canistels from a local vendor 3 days ago.  When I bought them, they are rock hard.  Now they have soften a little bit.  When it is ready to eat this fruit?

I am amazed that no one has responded to this. The only canistel that I ever ate I ate at about the softness of a boiled egg yolk. Apparently, I should have waited a little longer because I was not impressed. It was pretty dry and wasn't very sweet. I guess they get better when they are softer. We'll see if someone else will chime in now that I have broken the ice.

Let it get soft like a soft avocado.  Im not impressed either and I tied a bunch of them and Ross.  Just not my thing.

I let my Ross Sapote get really soft before eating and I enjoyed it very much. Brad was not as impressed as I was.

It should be soft enough to where its practically mush and the skin is breaking with any pressure. If not properly ripe they are pretty mealy and dry. Canistel or Ross make an excellent eggnog. Just blend with vanilla ice cream and add some cinnamon and/or nutmeg.
