Sunwest Fruit Co., based in Parlier, CA, will ship a new Mandarin orange variety called Ruby Tangos. The hybrid of a Clemenules Mandarin and a blood orange, the easy-peeler has a vibrant red flesh, virtually no seeds, is extremely juicy and is slightly larger than common Mandarin varieties.
It is about three weeks away from starting harvest on the Ruby Tango red flesh Mandarin. Sunwest is the only commercial supplier of this commodity. This program will start in mid-February and ship through March. Ruby Tangos have a unique taste with a berry-like flavor and has higher Brix levels than ordinary Mandarins.

Those have been around for a while. I was offered budwood for it a few years ago, but never pursued it.

Laaz, Sunwest claims they are the only US supplier. Perhaps Melissa's Produce got them out of Sicily. I know they have been available. in Europe for a while.

Though these names are getting way too generic. I just tried a new apple variety... "Sweet Tango" (it was very good btw).

Interesting. I bought these at a local farmer's market last season. Yes, I am sure they were Ruby Tangos. They were quite good, although not amazing, and had a unique flavor. I wonder what the rules are regarding national commercial suppliers vs. local growers.

Does anyone know of a company selling trees to the home garden market? That would be a rival for attention with the Zaiger fruit trees. I'd love to have one or more, imagine having a supply of that fruit. It would be an attention getter at a Farmer's market. Probably make fantastic dried slices too, peels and all.

I saw these in the grocery store today and bought some. They taste old, like they have been sitting in storage too long. Not good at all.
Growers trying to sell premier varieties need to put some kind of controls in place to ensure old product gets pulled. They are going to kill their reputation because people will try it once, think it is bad, and never try again. The variance in fruit quality is massive even for single varieties.

I asked about this exact variety about a year ago. This was after trying the fruit from a walmart, believe it or not.
It was maybe the best mandarin I have had (not that I've had that many). An incredibly different flavor from most citrus, super berry tasting, with a lot of sugar and a fantastic punch of acidity.
