Fairchild goes from bad to worse? Your post reminded me I resolved in 2017 to no bother attending unless I get an insider who can verify arrangements have improved since Doc Campbell left. Noris is great but...imported mangoes dominating the festival, twice, caused its overall appeal nosediving. Display table (even reduced to say 250 from 500 varieties), lectures have always been good but...

The only reason I'm considering going is to get some of these new hybrids.
I don't know how long it will take for other nurseries to start carrying them.
I have a canal bank that needs some extremely disease resistant mango, I wouldn't mind trying the hybrids there

Better too late than too early. They can put ripe mangoes in a refrigerated trailer out back then haul them out for the masses on July 14th. To Future- you are right on the date. It always landed on the 9th to12th of July. But Fairchild needs a weekend and this is how it turned out. The alternative of July 6-8th was was too early

We always have a good time at Mango Fest, have been going for years. An interesting mix of people, something good to eat, and lots of beautiful plants. Any excuse to goto Fairchild is good for me. Plan on volunteering there when I am an old man.
The hybrids mentioned are likely the casturi and kuini grafted plants they started selling last year. Not sure if any of the newer hybrids Dr. Ledesma is working on would be available or not, but that would be a nice bonus.

In some of the videos posted from last years festival, Dr. Ledesma stated that they'll be releasing 5 new hybrids in 2018.

Noris is speaking tonight on avocados at the fruit and spice park monthly meeting. Maybe we can get some details.

Indications are Fairchild either got lucky or received wisdom from the mango Gods on their mid July date. With that said, if once again a paltry local mango offering and dominant imported mangoes are on sale...display table may be the only good looking thing there.
Still seeking Fairchild insiders input...
As it happens, the fruit Gods seem to be smiling on me also. Heading to Penang late June for what is predicted as an epic Durian season overlap. Normally would be in FL. Arriving in FL on a lucky day, Friday July 13th...and it seems mango peak season will be waiting.

Yeah I agree on --- early mango season this year 2018 like you predicted above on January 16, 2018, 07:34:48 PM -SE Florida mango season meaning primarily the counties of Miami/Dade Broward and Palm Beach All in nearby counties do your calculations.

So I spoke to one of the chief organizers and the short story; expect more of the same as the last two years. It seems budget cuts have limited staff numbers such that the display table will be setup but once again, outsiders bringing in mangoes to sell.
For the first time in 8 years, i’m skipping the event.

I will definitely not attend. IMO, it is not directed toward the enthusiast.
I find it a shame since there is so much potential.

"Mangos of Haiti?" Would that be a lot of fibrous fruit from seedling trees? How about "Latest and Greatest Mango Varieties?" It seems Fairchild has become only about making money, like every other tourist attraction in Florida.

It will also feature jackfruit. I guess this means they won’t have a separate jackfruit festival again.

I like wandering around Fairchild, so the Mango Fest is still fun for me. Hopefully it will get better with time; maybe some forum members could find a way to help out, as I've heard some good ideas here and many remember what made the fest better in the past.
