I bought cherimoya from www.cherimoya.com (http://www.cherimoya.com) last year- seems like the website isn't working properly and the email link doesn't work. Does anyone know what happened to them?

Not sure what happened, but they did send out a notice that they would no longer be offering cherimoyas over the internet.

When I got mine last year, fruit was inconsistent and some arrived split...and from the looks of them they were split when they were packaged.

I just received an order of sapodilla from Erickson Farm.  Their website says they'll ship 7 pounds of sapodilla fruit, but I received 8.5 pounds (20 fruit).

Packing was a little weak, but the fruit are hard and appear to be in good shape after being mailed, so the packaging was effective enough.  Overall I'm happy with my order so far; now I just have to be patient for them to ripen so I can taste them.

Any guesses as to the variety?

Keep us updated on the ripening of those fruit. It may be the picture, but some appear to have too much green still showing under the skin. That means some may not ripen properly.

They all are certainly a little green under the brown skin, though some have only a small patch.  I've only seen and tasted ready-to-eat sapodilla before; I have zero ripening or picking experience.  My 'Silas Woods' plant has flowered once but no fruit set- not surprising for an 18" tall plant.

It's hard to get good fruit in Colorado in February, though the citrus and (surprisingly) jackfruit have been excellent recently.

You can add Peter Matsos who owns Park Hill Orchards in California. No website yet, but his email is chippiwa@hotmail.com. I ordered 40 pounds of cherimoya from him this winter, and I was quite happy with the quality. He has several different cultivars. He also has a lot of other fruit trees. Contact him for availability.

Thats more than a small patch of green.  They were definitely picked too early.  While the jury will be out as to how they ripen...the flavor and sweetness will be nowhere near the level they should be at.

As to variety, tough to say.  They may be Alano or they me so far underripe that it could be a number of others.  What is the texture of the outside of the skin, smooth, "rough", dirty feeling, etc.  Problem is that they may have been washed to clean the sap off of them so that outer skin texture may be of no help.

Every one I've tried so far has been very sweet, like every Sapodilla I've had before, but also so horribly astringent that I cannot eat it.  And I'm sure I'm letting them get soft enough; some were even starting to go bad from being too soft.  The skin was slightly gritty / dirty feeling.

I gave a few away and at least one was reported to have been good, but none of the ones I've tasted yet!  It does appear they were picked too early...  Always disappointing to have a box of inedible fruit.

I hope the company gives you a refund or at least ships you a new box with actual mature fruit that will ripen properly. I had a friend in GA who ordered from them two years ago and he said the quality of the fruit was good. I guess it comes down to who picks and packs the individual boxes. No quality control it seems if both Rob and I (and probably anyone else who has picked sapodilla from trees) were able to tell that fruit were not mature just from a pic. Keep us updated on their customer service. If its no good we will make sure to make a note of that on the top of the page so no one else is burned.

As lychee season comes to a start over there in florida, is there any way I can get some of those fresh tree ripen Florida lychee shipped here into California? I wanted to get some from Erickson's farm but on the site it says no shipping to CA or HI :'( I really wanted to try some fresh ones and not those unripened Mexican Mauritius, we usually get over here.

That is a big company, and it's products can be found shipped for resale in supermarkets. I have bought chayote squash, jicama, guava, all from them, and fronwhat I understand, their website carries everything from passion fruit to mangosteen.

The cherimoya.com website appears to be offering cherimoyas for sale by mail order once again.

Brad

Along with white sapote and some kind of pitaya (I forget). They offer a free cherimoya to new members.

I've ordered fruit from http://www.earthsource.us/ (http://www.earthsource.us/) based out of Florida. I bought their mixed fruit (ice cream bananas, sapodillas, mamey sapotes and mangoes) but the box only came with mameys and mangoes. Disappointment.

I am not sure, but I am going to guess irradiated. They pop up a few times every year, but they are pretty pricey. This amazon seller has them for about half price:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0018OM3EI (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0018OM3EI)
Seven to thirteen mangosteens for $70 including shipping. Since this is a website, you may be allowed to order?

Ah, that is good. Oscar, would it be possible to import fresh durian from Puerto Rico, if packaged properly? Is there any source there that does not send frozen fruit?

Possible yes, but probable no. The farm growing the non irradiated mangosteens is Panoramic fruit in PR
http://www.panoramicfruit.com/ (http://www.panoramicfruit.com/) They also grow durian. But they ship only to wholesalers and distributors, not to individual consumers. Also they are just starting production of durian. Don't think they've shipped any to continental USA.

Someone needs to file for a USDA risk assessment on durian before they'll be allowed in the US from Puerto Rico. May be a few years yet :(

Have you looked it up? Are you sure it hasn't been done already? If it hasn't then you're right it would take several years.

Treated myself to an early Christmas present. I ordered 8lbs of fresh Longan last night from these folks:

http://www.hulabrothers.com/store/cart.cgi?action=link&product=3 (http://www.hulabrothers.com/store/cart.cgi?action=link&product=3), who are a part of these folks: http://plantithawaii.com (http://plantithawaii.com).

I checked out with PayPal and received an immediate "Thank You" email confirmation. My order is supposed to be processed and mailed out next Monday, and I should be enjoying super fresh clusters of my all time favorite fruit by Wednesday. ^_^ They grow both Biew Kiew and Sri Chompoo, but I put in a request for Biew Kiew (as I think this was most likely the variety I fell in love with over in Thailand). I will post some photos when they come in!

I am happy to report that my order from the Hula Brothers arrived today, as scheduled!
(http://s30.postimg.cc/tjffkqpm5/hula_brothers_order001.jpg) (http://postimg.cc/image/tjffkqpm5/)

There was no sort of padding in the box, but that doesn't seemed to have caused any issues with the fruit what so ever.
(http://s29.postimg.cc/6j4p1kvtv/hula_brothers_order002.jpg) (http://postimg.cc/image/6j4p1kvtv/)

There was a certificate included that disclosed their irradiation treatment.
(For those curious, some of the seeds are sprouting anyway!)
(http://s27.postimg.cc/a2huvqo7j/hula_brothers_order003.jpg) (http://postimg.cc/image/a2huvqo7j/)

And then there was some lovely brochures and nutritional information cards included.

Side 1:

Side 2:
(http://s29.postimg.cc/gocjimt5v/hula_brothers_order005.jpg) (http://postimg.cc/image/gocjimt5v/)

These are, without a doubt, the most fresh, juiciest, biggest and best longan (Biew Kiew) that I have eaten since I was in Thailand!
(http://s30.postimg.cc/htaouubl9/hula_brothers_order006.jpg) (http://postimg.cc/image/htaouubl9/)

I will totally be buying from these guys again in the future!

I have yet to find any Florida growers willing to ship to me up here in Michigan. Maybe it's just one of those fruits that can't enter or exit your state? I dunno. I would have loved to buy some from Florida, but then, I wouldn't have found these guys.

I believe lycheesonline.com (http://www.lycheesonline.com/productlist.cfm?CategoryID=23 (http://www.lycheesonline.com/productlist.cfm?CategoryID=23)|Other%20Fresh%20Tropical%20Fruit) sells and ships longan each year.  When I have extra, I have sent some around here and there.  We have not had over abundant crops of the past couple of years and I am not a commercial seller/shipper.  When I can get the time and the inclination to merge, you might try me for some this coming season.  No promises, but worth the shot.

Gladly. :) I'd like to try all of the different varities, when I get a chance.

I'm also on the hunt for someone that ships jackfruit (preferably a deeper orange with a stronger, sweeter flavor). So if you know anybody who has an overabundance of those at some point during the year and is willing to ship, please let me know!

Kent's in December are more than likely imported (from Central or South America) and therefore probably went through a hot water treatment and are probably not going to be all that good. Let us know how it turns out.

They do on Amazon, but it's quite pricey for a little only(I think 6 or 9 for $70?). Though they don't have any for sale now, but another seller is for the same price. I don't buy fruits online, unless I know it has been grown locally/domestically and not sent from around the world. I would rather go straight to the source and enjoy all I can eat when it's in season for a fraction of these online wholesale company' prices. But, if you want to try then go ahead and give it a shot, it is good, just not like fresh tree ripen or fresh from the source  :)

I have a late crop coming this year in late October/November.  I've never shipped and have a grower manage the grove from A to Z and he sells to a Chinese wholesaler.  Next year I may set aside a few trees to see if I can establish an online presence as well as by appointment only.  I'm not sure how much effort it takes to generate enough orders to make an online store feasible.  Any thoughts from someone how has experience in this is appreciated.

I had some come out in July/August and the were outstanding.  I gave some to friends who never tried them (and didn't even know what they were) and they loved them and want more.

I don't know anything about online stores, but if you do both on site/local sales and online sales(shipping), then advertise every where: CL other sites/forums, etc (here included), i'm sure you will get some business coming to your future business. Price should be competitive with other sellers around you(I think fresh longans range from $1-$5 /lbs retail? and whole sale may be a bit less, depending on crop availability that year and how much they buy(wholesale). But, just don't charge anything like how lycheeonline prices theirs, $14-$20/lb  ???.

I guess that works for some, but not all people/consumers will agree to that price range.

Just my .02  :)

A neighbor of mine had and early crop (late June) and was getting mid $60's for 20lb boxes wholesale.  Now in peak season, they are going for $20 for a 20lb box wholesale if they take them at all.  I expect the later October/November crop will get a good price.

[/quote]Ya, like everything else, when it's an early crop, you can charge a higher price, but in peak season, it will go down drastically.

Ya, the late season should get a good price than the peak season, but doubt it will be as high is the early crop season.

Sadly, here in Brazil we donīt have options to build these fruits online. Only "normal" fruits (orange, pear, apple...) are available.

Sure we have, but unhappyness they arenīt comercialized.
Of the 20 most consumed fruits here in Brazil, only three are native to our country: pineapple, guava and passion fruit. Even jabuticaba gets off this list, although it is comercialized normally.
All the rest of our fruits is treated as exotic and comercialized at high prices, when found... In fact, is relatively easy to find lichia, rambutan, mangosten and others, but grumixamas, pitangatubas, saputás and all the others... Thereīs no signal.

Could be some are hard to grow/find/propagate/takes too long to produce or maybe they just don't handle transporting to well?

It's the same for everyplace, even if they can grow most things, they still want to import from someplace else. I think it's cheapest to buy from local vendors, where the fruits is actually grown and harvested, small village markets, side/street stalls, where not so many tourist travel.Where ever they're  tourist, it's always going to be more.

Again, I think most Eugenia fruit species are very perishable, so maybe that's why they aren't sold very often. But they do grow natively, so I guess if you know how the tree looks like, you can probably go harvest some your self when in season.

Yes, Thao, all that you wrote is true in some degree.

Some arenīt hard to grow/find/propagate, donīt takes too long to produce and can handle transporting. And you could comercialize frozen pulp of the ones that canīt handle transporting. The vast majority of brazilians donīt know the native fruits, and I think the actual situation is a result of colonization and imported culture. So, the native fruits remained almost forgotten for a long time.

To say the truth, actually there is a crescent interest in the native fruits here, and a few are being produced or at least collected from the nature, as the uvaia for example. Brazil is a big country, and it also makes difficult to find/ to know all the fruits. Regionally itīs easier, but still, is hard to find them. :)

If you think situation is bad in Brazil you should try finding some of the very easy to find products in Brazil in the USA, like ice creams made of acai, cupuacu, mangaba, nance, soursop, etc. Or juices and wines of jaboticaba, cupucacu, and cashew, which are very easy to find in Brazil. It seems to me that in Brazil there is very good selection of processed products from lesser known fruits, but very hard to get them fresh, unless you go to Belem or Bahia, and even then very few vendors have them. Selection of fresh fruits in big cities like Rio de Janeiro are, like you say, very disappointing.

Yeah, that's how I feel about the fruit I can purchase online and have shipped from Florida.
I think it's the name of the game for online fruit retailers but when your dreaming of a fruit you have no other way to taste , it can be worth that premium. Frog Hollow is expensive even farmers market direct $3.90 pd. for stone fruits and around $6 for Cherries last season. It is good fruit though I'll give them that, and their dried fruit is amazing as well.

$10 a pound for citrus is pricey? I would call it astronomically expensive, and that doesn't include shipping? Maybe i read it wrong and the prices are in pesos not dollars?  ;)

Wow, I did not know they grew or shipped Citrus. That is nuts, they must be making good money re-selling citrus from http://www.aboundingharvest.com/Blog.html (http://www.aboundingharvest.com/Blog.html)
Anyways I posted the link for their Pluots, Apricot , Peaches, and Cherries which are I'm sure expensive as well but top notch. This Farm has blown up in popularity the last few years with a permanent retail outlet in the Ferry building in San Francisco , and now a Cafe.
I think I'd rather pay $10 a pd for first week of harvest Apricots than any Citrus or Avocado.
$20 a pound is not uncommon price for Jaboticaba and some other fruits shipping from Florida, at least the seeds are useful : )
If only fruitlovers and the other Hawaiian's could ship fruit......

Thanks to those little fruit flies i can't even send a little gift box of fruits to relatives on the mainland.  :'(  Only nuked fruits can be sent, and only certain fruits for which they have the nuking protocol set up.
PS the only fruits on frog hollow website right now are citrus and apples...not very exciting. Not exciting enough to pay $10 a pound for in my opinion.

Yeah, I don't understand the loopy protocol . Rambutan can be shipped from HI but not Lychee or Longan?
Pineapples and Papaya but nothing else , not expecting consistency but a rational explanation from the agency in control would be nice. So many things I wish you could ship but mainly Breadfruit and Ackee.

No way those brokered Citrus or Apples are worth $5 a pound to me. I was posting the link because soon enough they will have all those Zaiger stone fruit varieties that others on the board seem excited about and don't have access to the fruit yet for the most part. I figured it is better to post early so people can suss it out , the season on good  Apricot and Cherry go quick.

Irradiatied longan is being shipped out of Hawaii and sold on the mainland. There is a protocol also for lychee, but they aren't shipped just because there is enough demand in Hawaii to consume all that is produced. Unsprouted coconuts can be mailed without any treatment.

Hi all, my first time posting.

I live in CT, where access to tropical fruit is very limited.  I saw Cherimoya in the store one time but they were $13/lb (!) and I didn't know what to look for; haven't seen it since.  I've fallen in love with mangos over the last couple of years but have never had any outside of Tommy Atkins (which I can't stand, but I've never had one from a backyard), Kent (which I love), Keitt, and maybe a Haden, but I can't remember.   I've read and heard that Valencia Pride is a great mango and see the Mango Factory grows them.  I would imagine since the vast majority are in Florida that they likely haven't had to go this route, I'd greatly appreciate if anyone has any experience with this grower.  I assume since it is listed that it's been vouched for, but a little backup never hurt!   I was also wondering, though I don't know if this is the right thread for it, if I would be able to buy any mangoes from other members when it's the season.   I haven't been down to Florida in years and it's unlikely I'll be able to make a trip this year with my work schedule, so being able to experience a variety of mangoes would be awesome!  Any help would be highly appreciated.

I had a really bad experience with Miami Fruit. My large box of soursops came almost completely crushed. There were three large fruit in the box and they only had those thin flexible foam sleeves around them--that level of padding might work for apricots or nectarines but definitely not for 4lb fruit. Only the one fruit sitting on top of the other two was intact.
I photographed the unopened box to show that several cups of liquid had leaked out after the UPS guy dropped it off. The address, tracking number, etc were all visible in this high quality photo. I then removed the smashed fruit and placed them in a large bowl and photographed them. I also provided screenshots of the PayPal receipt for the order.
I contacted Miami Fruit describing what happened and they requested the time-stamped photos, etc. After a few days they got back with me saying that my last order was over a month ago and that they would not help. Apparently when I checked out I had done it as a guest, so they were looking at my previous order history...this was an understandable mistake except that I had provided them with all of the requested time-stamped info, my PayPal information, as well as all the readable data on the package. They were being very obtuse and stonewalled me but kept answering my emails with lots of happy, chirpy exclamation-point filled messages.
I'm not ordering from them again. The customer service experience was really terrible, and the last couple of orders of fruit were not good (mameys -- not sweet, the last two of three soursop orders were also not good, but boy was that first one good!). In their last email they faulted me for not sending them photos the day the fruit arrived--I contacted them the next day--this was ridiculous goalpost moving since previously they were only requiring time-stamped photos to show the damage. Just a huge waste of time.

Anyone have any other domestic US sources of Annona fruit and/or sapote-type fruit?

I just found out that Jim West's seed packets are being confiscated by the Ecuadorian Ministry of the Environment, so there will no longer be any seeds coming from Guaycuyacu Seeds.

Year of the Durian (https://www.yearofthedurian.com/product/buy-durian-online) has started shipping out frozen flesh of three Filipino durian varieties to North America. Here in the US, I've only ever seen Monthong and Musang King. Frozen pulp mostly, while fresh/never-frozen whole fruit has turned up for $50+ minimum in a few local Asian markets. A rare opportunity to try different kinds of an already rare and expensive fruit. I ordered a package and it got here exactly as described: 2-day shipping with plenty of ice packs and insulation to keep them frozen during transit.

Got a couple more online sources for uncommon fruit.

YP Farms (https://www.ypfarms.com/) sells several varieties of lychees and mangoes. Of note are black sapotes which have been the cheapest I've found online ($3 USD/lb). They just went into season. I just got my 10lb box (24 sapotes) in great condition. They're all unripe/green so I have to wait to try them. Shipping is via FedEx. According to their FAQs, if you want a lower quantity of any fruit than what's listed on the site, you can contact them.

Another one to check out is the Etsy seller FreshFloridaFruit (https://www.etsy.com/shop/FreshFloridaFruit). Consistently solid reviews and pretty good pricing. Ordered some canistel from him this past summer and was pleased with the quick communication and ability to adjust shipping arrangements.

Hey everyone! Who is currently selling varieties of tropical fruits for shipping now? I'm particularly interested in Eggfruit, Mangosteen, Dragonfruit, etc but interested in what's available at the moment. I've already bought from Miamifruit and was pleased but didn't get as much variety in the variety boxes as hoped. I'm not interested in what Tropicalfruitbox or Robert Was Here have at the moment, so what are my other options?

I recommend Etsy. I've seen quite a few new reputable exotic fruit sellers open up shop over the past year. For canistel / eggfruit in particular, I recommend FreshFloridaFruit (https://www.etsy.com/listing/745438510/fresh-canistel-eggfruit-3-lbs) who I bought from last year. For what's in prime season at the moment, there are quite a few listings for black sapote on the site if you're interested. They're generally the cheapest exotic fruit you can find with the smallest availability window.
